how can drilling multiple holes in chunky ally bar for that terrible bodge be a preferable solution to just buying a new crank? the mind boggles.

What if you're out in the boonies and your crank breaks and all you have with you is a drill press, a variety of bolts, some heavy duty wire, pliers, wrenches and a screwdriver? Hm?

I think some people really, really enjoy "fixing" shit, with little regard for the end result.

Once you start a bad idea, it's kinda hard to stop until it's a complete bad idea.
