  • Just put my first batch of cold brew in the fridge for tomorrow. 50g coarse ground beans and 400ml water.

  • Hmm, i guess theres more going on with the board then.

  • Me too.

50g of coffee, 650ml of water (Hario's recipe).

Ground on '0' grind setting which is totally arbitrary as the thing spins around totally. It's basically a few clicks less than my espresso grind as a starting point. Coffee, water, coffee, water, coffee, water, coffee, water to get it all nice and wet. Went in at 7:30pm so if I wake up early enough tomorrow this should be strong, if not, it'll be stronger.

Someone on youtube said 1 part cold brew to 2-3 parts water or milk. Anyone have any first hand suggestions? I'm sure I'll be banging back whole jugs neat tomorrow but you know, for normal people?

  • In the cafe we use a 1:1 ratio to water, or 50ml concentrate to 125ml tonic

  • I just chucked mine in Kilner jar that came with a cheap hand grinder I was given.

I had mine (filtered through a Hario paperv after about 12 hours in the fridge) 1/3 cold brew, 1/3 water and 1/3 milk with ice. Was delicious.

I've got just enough left to fill a stainless flask to take with me for a ride tomorrow morning.

  • What an extraordinary difference a splash of Puly makes. Coffee has been tasting pretty samey lately from the Technivorm. Not any more. Found a couple of hidden teaspoons in the back of the cupboard and let her rip today. Obvious but still surprising how instantly delicious coffee becomes again.

    (personally I give myself 5)

  • I've tested the 12hr neat and then 1:1 as I don't want to waste all that brew time by diluting too much. It's pretty good. Much nicer than that fake shit I tried out of a can the other day.

I've done another brew just now using one stop coarser on the grinder to see if it makes any difference to the fine sediment left on the bottom of the Mizu jug.

Shit, I didn't even think of that. Imagine 2x1L bidons filled with 12hr cold brew. Look out PBs! :D

  • This sounds odd but is lovely, top up your cold brew with some tonic water.

  • And a lime.
    Genuinely good.

  • I don't like tonic though. Soda water perhaps?

  • Maybe soda water and a touch of lime? I tried with just soda and it’s a little flat compared to more of a bite with tonic.
But I only use 1/2 a small can of tonic,so you may be able to tolerate/enjoy it?

  • Took a litre and a half to an all night movie marathon, had to stop on the ride home as my heart felt like it was going much too fast!

  • I think my size probably helps my caffeine tolerance. You're what, 20+ kg lighter?
I accidentally took 2g of caffeine instead of 200mg (don't fuck about with caffeine powder, kids!) before a turbo session before going out to dinner and it didn't even appear to impact my sleep.

  • Water filter system now operational!

Everpure Claris cartridge that feeds the 3 way tap and also the coffee machine direct.

    Thanks @StevePeel for the recommendation

How do these price against the 3M carts? I assume based on looks alone they make stuff that's 3M compatible or would I need to swap out the filter head if I wanted to use one of these instead?

3M ScaleGard Pro P124BN-E Water Filter Cartridge are £98 on Amazon.

A flask of cold brew used to be part of my standard issue overnight audax kit. I’d sip it throughout the night. I’m using whisky nowadays (and don’t really do big audaxes anymore anyway).

Here is the link - they are broadly the same price. Good for 3,000 litres so that's good for at least a year depending on your coffee intake / water consumption.

You would also need a new head, which is £43.

  • Basic question time… what does this do to your water? Does it taste better?

  • I sat at the top of Hackpen drinking mine this morning. Made me feel like I was riding an audax.

  • It is like a tarted up Brita filter really.

I was using a Brita jug so I thought I would get this system installed as part of my new kitchen to avoid having a Brita jug altogether.

    Here is the official blurb:
Adjustable ion-selective filters to tailor carbonate hardness levels in potable water.

    CARTRIDGE FEATURES
    5-stage filtration process

    • Pre-filtration
    • Carbonate hardness adjustment
    • Fine filtration
    • Highly efficient carbon block removes harmful contaminants and unpleasant odors and tastes
    • Solid membrane filter removes particles down to 5 micron for highest equipment protection
    • Operation in vertical or horizontal position
  • Replaced the resistor in the mc2, no joy. Fark.

  • It probably took out the 3-pin switching transistor (or vice versa). No easy way to check that, but you can check the diode is still working which I think is part of the same bit of the circuit. Just fingers crossed after that, in case it also blew the control chip.

  • Finally got around to buying a scale and has confirmed my suspicions that my extract is too fast. I'm using Pact coffee, pre-ground to 'fine' for espresso use.

This morning, aiming for a 2:1 ratio, a 22g dose yielded 45g in around 16 seconds - I understand that I should be in the 20-30 second bracket.

My thinking is to tamp with more pressure to slow the extraction. After that, I'm really not sure...
