I don't know if this makes it any worse, but given that he's meant to be some kind machiavellian genius why lie about it, if your going to just tough it out anyway, it gives more oxygen to the story.

He was only up there because his niece and sister had already offered help (but you live 260 miles away?), He was never closer than shouting distance to his family, stayed in a completely separate part of the estate, and it is all "concrete block" housing anyway, not anything pleasant or enjoyable.
