  • This is a fun bike! First ride was mega fun until a flat tyre and slow bump home. Surprised how much it could cope with and how well it climbs

  • super nice that transition

  • After a long time off the bike I'm starting to get back into riding again. My main bike at the moment is this monstercross/sscx thing I built a few years back but after putting in a few miles on it I've come to the conclusion that its not fun to ride. The drive train is spongey because the rear mech hanger is snapped off so the chain tensioner is only doing half a job. Im toying with the idea of building a new rear wheel with an eccentric hub but Im also considering trying to find a more suitable frame to shift the parts over to. Can anyone give me some suggestions for a disc compatible frame with horizontal dropouts that would fit mtb wheels and tires so I can weigh up my options?

  • Is it 135 rear spacing? Get a proper mtb like an inbred!

  • Trek Crockett or Checkpoint?

  • Get a new hanger ?

  • So. Much. Fun.

SSCX Charge Plug with extra knobbly Knard wheelset.

  • Why the Shimano STIs....

  • Money to burn looking at the moots seatpost and paul brakes

  • because they are super light

  • Has a Dbad sticker, whose is it?

  • To match the shit saddle

  • so i ended up getting a Trek Crockett

bit of advice needed I think (looking @andyp ). I need some 100x12mm and 142x12mm hubs and am probably looking at second hand Hope Pros of eBay. If anyone has any (or similar) let me know.

for cranks I have some Rotor 3D24s or some SRAM Force (I think, might be Rival) beaters. Also got my trusty Alfines but they don't scream 'cross race bike'

On the back, I'm assuming I now have the advantage of being able to easily switch rear cogs and fine-tune the chainline using spacers, right?

the only downside of the whole affair is that the frame and tubs now clash horribly (pic to follow in a second...)

  • Not as clashy as 3xpected, I'd wanna see it built up but gluing tubs for a visual check might be much. Maybe just offer it all up, or sit the tubs on the rims and see how it looks built

Mind you I'm probably n9t the oldest person to advise. Green is my fav colour and I've got all sorts of mismatched green on my bike

  • everything about this is beautiful

  • amey you know about boring nerdy bike shit

HOW THE FUCK DO ALL THESE COMPLICATED NEW AXLES WORK?!?!?!?!

my bike says it needs 100x12 and 142x12 hubs but there's all these end caps and adapters and replacement axles wHaT dO i Do?

I've got 5 pairs of wheels with Hope Pro hubs. Rock solid. The freehubs can get a bit sticky after a season or two, but that's an easy issue to resolve as you can strip them down and any bits that need replacing are readily available.

I'm all for lairy cross bikes too, so green tyres and a green/blue-ish frame gets my vote.

Added: the dropouts are great. Take your time to learn how to get it them set up, and I'll dig out a video on YouTube shortly that I found really useful, but once you know the sequence it's a 2-3 minute job to swap over cogs and get the chain re-tensioned. The best bit is that they don't budge a millimetre, so once chain tension is right, it stays right.

Here's the YouTube video - with added New Order-esque muzak.
