  • Soo, ive been on eBay and bought a set of DT Swiss 21mm Oxic rims and some ‘PPINA’ branded bitex hubs - both are 20/24, before researching spokes and making the all important black or silver choice I’m considering a 20h SP dynamo to run lights... how should one lace these? Would radial be an issue for any reason? no idea what I’m doing really, cheers in advance!

  • Can do them for you if no one else has offered. Have lots of spokes I can cut to length. If you need something specific that I don't have I'll need to order in.

  • Ah thanks, I'll give that a go. I could also "borrow" their code and incorporate into my own spoke length calculator.

  • And today I'm scratching my head over hub that has 8 holes on non-drive and 16 on the drive side. Radial and 2-cross? Radial and 3-cross? Not straight pull this time though so feel a bit more confident.

  • Hi Arup, Roger Musson has a good description of the straight pull calculation and his own calculator is now compatible too. £9 well spent anyway.

  • Cool, will shoot you a pm when the rims get in.
    Ta.

  • I went for 3 cross on my triplet-laced rear wheel, on the basis that the 16 DS spokes were functionally equivalent to half a 32 spoke wheel, which I would build 3 cross. Hasn't fallen apart yet.

  • Is there any reason why the 8 spoked side would have to be laced radial?

  • God I’m bored.

  • It's half a 16 spoke wheel. You could do 1X, you might even get closer to tangential with 2X if the PCD is a very small fraction of the ERD. On the other hand, why would you? If you wanted that side to apply torque, you wouldn't have half the spokes missing 🙂

  • Yeah I was thinking one cross I guess.

See what you mean re: torque.

The other I rode a bike of mine I hardly ever ride, disgusted with myself for having laced rear NDS and front all radial. Both 32! Why the hell did I do that?

  • Rebuilding a stock front wheel from a Boardman CXR for a friend after he put a motorcycle tyre lever through the spoke bed. Fairly sure the rim is an offset Kinlin XR22T. I’ve measured the ERD at 599 vs 596 (from cycleclinic). Width and depth are all within 1mm. Can I get away with reusing the spokes?

Depends on the hub. If it has standard spoke flanges, then no. My only triplet build so far used a Tune Mag150 hub, and the NDS has to be laced radially with that hub.

    I'd give it a try.

  • Anyone got a mega cheap 36h rear hub (rim brake, road or mtb) they’d like rid of? QR, 130mm should fit

  • post I've had go missing....

I have noticed in some country lanes around Hertfordshire are festoon with ripped open amazon boxes 🤬

  • But on the subject of wheel building
I downloaded The art of Wheel building by Gerd Shraner it’s great. It explains all you need to know. It’s in .pdf format too.

  • This is how I learnt. Its great

  • I think I need to get reading sometime soon. Just waiting for the axle kit now.

  • Nice, but only one DTI? I find it quite useful being able to measure run out and concentricity at the same time.

  • Need some help again. This time sourcing parts. Kinlin XR22T in polished silver 32 asymmetric for the rear and 28 symmetric for the front. I had a look on @cycleclinic but there is only one polished silver in 28 asymmetric. The person for whom I'm planning to build these up already has the hubs and has asked me to help source the rims.

  • Maybe @broken_777 can help

Also worth contacting Malcolm (the cycle clinic) directly, he may not have all his current stock on his website

  • Snap for the Torx keys!
    We're Wera bros.

    Looks a challenging breakfast.

  • I considered it but wanted a minimum viable product first. If it works and I find myself using it regularly (I already have 3 pairs of wheels in mind so this will probably be the case if I don't suck at it) I'll add a second one.

  • This is way fun out of context.
