The frame is definitely something I want to keep so the hacksaw method is a bit brutal.

Ive seen the bolt/washer method but I think the teeth are too minced for that now.

It's only as brutal as you are hamfisted. It's pretty easy to be careful with it and avoid damaging the shell. It's also quite possible to cut a couple mm into the shell, chase the thread and carry on regardless.

The whole cartridge is inside though so it's not as simple as just cutting through the cup. Id have to knock out the axle and bearings first.
