Yeah, well... an ML. Ā£100 including postage and a case from Facebook Marketplace š
My plan is to turn it into the complete opposite of the Dimebag confederate flag guitars, I love Dimebag but it sucks that these are so heavily associated with being a racist asshole. Expect some sort of psychedelic rainbow paintjob and a a unicorn headstock "inlay".
Probably new pickups and tuners too, not going to spend a heap of money on it but something fun!

Hmmm, not sure dime was problematic, Anselmo, deffs.
Those confederacy paint jobs can fuck off indeedio.
Happy dive-bombing nonetheless.

I thought they'd be been raised already but I'll take another look once the strings are back on... It's been a busy afternoon!
It would be great to find a cover and do as you say but these pickups seem to be very thin on the ground... See how we go with your suggestion, might not even need one! They do have a rep for sounding a bit shit, would love to get some more mids out of it somehow...

Oh yeah, no I know Dime was a conservative Republican but I don't think he was any more problematic than being a Bush supporter! The confederate flag ML is the poster guitar for racist, cousin marrying scumbags so I'm hoping to undo some of that baggage and make a peace and love ML š
Trying to make my mind up on pickups and currently going back and forth between something PAF inspired and an actual Telecaster set with pickup ring adaptors? I'm hoping for a rock machine outcome but not metal machine. Psychedelic stoner vibes ideally! Might actually even consider the Lace Sensor Matt Pike Dragonauts?
Found this while searching for paint inspiration...

Dremel and one coat of paint later... This Tamiya enamel is a bit shit, coverage is terrible... I'm sure a few coats will look good, I should've put a primer down really but I know Kim didn't so... š¤·āāļø

My Recording King has arrived. Tuners arenāt great, so I may take those apart and see if I can oil them. The fret ends are sharp so itāll need some filing and sanding. Also needs some new strings as they're tarnished from storage. And the fretboard could do with some oil. But....
Iām staggered they can make something like this and ship it for Ā£127. Sounds pretty good and the construction looks solid, albeit lacking lots of careful finishing.
Cheap guitars are pretty great these days.

Never tried one of those funky Gretsches. They look sort of cool. Pretty sure the bodies are entirely laminated, though.

So apart from wanting to make it look as it used to, do you also want to do something with the sound that makes it sound like it used to, if that's even possible? Or just better than it does following this restoration? Forgive the ignorant question, I don't know anything about guitar tech.

The specs say it's basswood with a nato neck. From what I understand basswood can vary in quality but surely they'd mention if it was laminated?
-
• #8687
Nope, makers will generally only say if wood is solid.

Fair enough.

It probably does sound the way it used to, I just remember it as sounding a lot tougher... It's on plenty of records, I should go back and listen to them a bit more closely... It's the clean guitar on this track, going through a silverface Pro Reverb probably, and the slide on You Only Live Twice...

Ah, OK. So do you need other equipment to get the sound back as it was recorded?

I just want it to sound good to my ears but I don't wanna mess with it too much to get it there... Flames are primed!

That looks as if it's been played a bit!
-
• #8694
Yeah, I was just wondering if you wanted to get the Scientists sound.
-
• #8695
I can get that any time I want but not really what I'm after... I just want the guitar to sound as amazing as it can! TBH I think the paint job is gonna turn it into a total freak guitar only suitable for playing at home and displaying on the wall anyway...
Kim's gonna play it when he's next in town which will be kinda cool...
-
• #8696
I see. Again, you have to forgive my ignorance. I was just made curious as to whether the restoration had changed the character of the sound, and I didn't realise it would be easy to get the original sound.

Thanks Oliver, Iām not planning to restore this.. just enjoy playing and learning something new.

Looks ace - people pay a lot of money or go to a lot of trouble to ārelicā guitars like that - phoney but the boundaries of art design fashion taste and science all kinda blend into one with guitars i always think
-
• #8699
I didn't mean to imply that it should be restored! I like it when things look well-used.

I have this Danelectro DC59M NOS in my basement if anyone is interested, no need for it.
