• I got a little stand from Amazon and then I got the Magic Keyboard when it was released. I alternate depending on what I'm doing, as there's a few things I need the iPad in portrait mode for, mainly Zoom meetings where I'm dealing with lots of papers (this doesn't work with Sidecar yet).

  • Nice.

I use an external keyboard and mouse and have my MBP on a stand... I am wondering if the place to put the iPad Pro is simply on top of the keyboard and trackpad of the MBP so that it feels in use like the MBP is a dual-screen clam shell.

Looking up the dimensions... I think this could work perfectly:

    • MacBook Pro 13" 2020: 11.97 inches x 8.36 inches
    • iPad Pro 11": 9.74 inches inches inches x 7.02 inches
    • iPad Pro 12.9": 11.04 inches inches x 8.46 inches

Side by side the 12.9" is probably better, but on top of the keyboard the 11" looks perfect.

I think with the iPad Pro 11" over the keyboard the speakers on the MBP would still have clearance on the sides but the touch bar will be covered (but it would fit the depth even accounting for the feet of the stand curled over the bottom of the MBP in the photo).

All I would do is buy adhesive feet for the iPad Pro https://www.amazon.co.uk/Adhesive-Rubber-Bumper-Furniture-Protectors/dp/B07MCXY9F7/ and put them at the corner to ensure I didn't scratch the MBP or push any keys down when it's resting on top, plus it would mean that any airflow that exists in the MBP via the keyboard would still work.

i.e. in this photo... for the iPad 11" to cover the keyboard.

  • This would work. Here’s how the 12.9” would look, it fits the keyboard area perfectly, leaving the MBP speakers clear. And the iPad replicates the Touchbar with Sidecar, in the photo you can just about see it at the bottom, so you can still see and use it.

The only drawback I could see is within the display settings, you can only arrange the iPad in the left or the right.
