  • Backflushed rancillo silvia and now no water coming out of the grouphead. Blocked solenoid? And what tools do I need to attempt to resolve - I'm packing house so want to make sure I have what I need before starting!

  • Ha, my Gaggia Cubika has just started having the same problem. Descaled for the first time in many moons recently. The pump makes a lot of noise but is unable to draw any water from the tank.

Not sure the Cubika has a solenoid tho.

    Any ideas?

  • V60 filter delivery status: delivered
    Coffee delivery status: delivered
    V60 dripper delivery status: pending

    HURRY UP!!!

  • Descale again? Sometimes descaling can loosen scale and it blocks shit.

Also, did you drain it or something? You might need to prime the pump if it's sucking air - I have a small syringe that I'd force water up the inlet with (although it's now on ultrasonic cleaning degreaser removal duties so I can't use it further).

  • Tried blowing it clear and no joy. I've taken it apart, and the bit that seems blocked is the bit between the safety valve and the pump - it's a one way valve to stop pressure from the boiler forcing water back into the pump (I'm assuming).

Replacement pump should sort it, and I can't put it back together anyway as I'll need threadlocker to seal the thread connecting the pump to safety valve.

On that note - what do people use as a food safe thread sealer?

  • Whats a v60 dropper? I am intrigued

  • Ceramic or glass v60 dripper, because you’re guaranteed to fucking drop it.

  • Dripper. Thanks autocorrect 🤨

  • A lesson in how to take ownership of a mistake and offer a proper apology.

  • Long time lurker...

I've got to disagree with you. This is just the first time he's been called out on it. He regularly dots his videos citing scientific method and facts either wrongly or just sometimes making it up. He states stuff with confidence and an air of superiority to make it seem legitimate and often it's just wrong. It's damaging, like in this instance it has the real possibility to damage the reputation of a company that has actually, unlike him, a level of scientific culpability.

I think it's lucky that he's decided to inflict himself only on the coffee world, if he decided to make videos about something other than coffee then he could be quite a dangerous communicator.

Sure, he's made a successful business out of roasting coffee but so have a lot of independent roasters. For everything else, I personally think he's a charlatan.

  • I get where you’re coming from with the criticisms of his methods, but it’s for YouTube not peer reviewed research.

He hits a balance between information and watchability (for me). I like his input on how to do stuff at home, but any “data” he presents is quite clearly subjective to a degree.

Maybe I’m being naive - but if you take YouTube as a credited source of information that’s on you.

I do get what you’re saying though.

  • often it's just wrong

    Such as?

  • Hello. I get what you're saying about his content in general although I think nefarious sums up quite well how his content works for the armchair coffee drinkers like me.

This doesn't take away from the fact that he makes a very clear correction and apology, much better than the non-apologies our leading public figures often make on more serious matters. Perhaps I should've shared it in the politics thread really.

  • I would suggest ecoffee have either threatened him with legal action or complained to YouTube. One way or other they’ve made him take the video down and retract his comments.

  • Well the ecoffee example is the most readily available one right now.

He said something had been proven to be dangerous to someone's health, and it hadn't been.

@nefarious - yes I understand, I'm not under any illusions as to the nature of YouTube. My issue is the way he quite regularly says stuff under the guise of scientific method when it's just him trying to validate his own opinions about things. Yeah, it's frivolous because it's about the subject of coffee but it's dangerous when it gets put into other environments i.e. anti-vaxxers and that kinda stuff.

It's a bit of a leap granted, but all this stuff irks me. I'm a scientist and the way he dresses up his presentations really bothers me.

  • "He regularly dots his videos citing scientific method and facts either wrongly or just sometimes making it up." yet you can't provide another example except for the thing he's apologising for? I've only watched a couple of his vids but if you're gonna slate some dude for being regularly inaccurate I'd rather hope that you're not being inaccurate.

  • About to crack a can of this: https://www.wiggle.co.uk/truestart-cold-brew-coffee-250ml/

I don't really like it. Sour and a bit artificial.

  • This is my view also

  • Yup I'd bet that's the case.

  • In the interest this generated, I looked into these cups and found an ecoffee_cup twitter account with enough tweets & replies about cracked cups to make me consider that particular product wouldn't be high on my coffee shopping list.

  • I had a bamboo cup as a gift. There were two things I didn't like about it. I think its biggest flaw was its lack of temperature stability. It expanded so much that the bottom bulged slightly. The second thing I didn't like was that it's natively slightly porous as a material, so it never really fully loses the odour of what was in it previously. That meant you could always smell a trace of the previous coffee or if you cleaned it with washing up liquid there was a lingering odour of detergent or lemon.

  • They have loads of those cups in one of the places where I work. They break a lot.

Them breaking a lot is separate to them being toxic. I also believe that Hoffman acted on good faith, and his apology is honest. I’ve seen him correct himself before. Just doesn’t strike me as a cunty type.

  • I think I’ve found the source of the problem with my MC2.

Matey in the circle looks pretty fucked and has no continuity.

I need to do some more tests - check the motor etc. I’m not great with circuit function and design. Would the motor being fucked blow a resistor?

A new board is £20, and probably worth a punt once I’ve checked the motor is ok. Just need to learn how to do that!

  • I have a basic soldering set I bought off eBay to fix my soundbar, which had a £0.20 capacitor blown.

If you are local you can borrow it to replace this component?

I managed to do it and fix my soundbar so it is entirely within anyone's capacities!!!
