Anyone with an allotment?

Some of them will recover ok I reckon. Kicking myself for not using a spare mesh tunnel cloche I have stashed at the allotment.

Fruit cage on point! I picked up two more pallets today so can go about making some more of my brassica covers.

Mine were bad but will come back I think.

Yeah my Dad has been growing for years and he says there's live plant between buried tuber and surface that'll regrow. Yield might be less and slightly later though. Fingers crossed.

My next project is some similar covers. Ta for the inspiration.

Similar story at ours, I made such a commotion when i spotted them one of the older guys came over, he said they would sulk for a few weeks and be fine.

Spuds lightly frost nipped but coming back

My spuds showing green shoots of recovery today, no pics.

I planted my second earlies (Apache) in two goes, so when I went up yesterday the second batch were just starting to emerge, bit of a boost after the frost scorching everything else got.

Put in my main crop spuds yesterday as well.

Some advice sought on sweetcorn as I’ve not done it before.

Planning a 5x3 block on the allotment, running out of pots but wanted to take advantage of the warm weather to get them started. Is this loo roll thing destined to fail? I’ll cover it with a clear lid and put it in the greenhouse shelving unit thing.

Seen this work with leeks so can’t see why it wouldn’t with corn...

It'll be fine, ours are grouped in pots now so access to more compost nutrients ahead of planting out.

Good luck with the sweetcorn! I just put some seeds straight outside in trays About two weeks ago and they’ve been coming up fine. My worst crop ever was a ground sowing that got devastated by slugs etc so good to get them a decent size first... you may need to watch for foxes when the corns get a decent size.

Progress... a bit of frost burn or sunburn on the spuds where they were in contact with the fleece during the cold snap, but that's supposed to be it for this year, so got the beans, peas and courgettes in. Put down nematodes to keep the slugs away for a few weeks while everything gets established.

We've got bindweed in one of our beds - is the only solution to dig as much of it out as we can? Weed suppressing membrane doesn't seem to faze it as it just grows sideways til it finds the edge.

Digging will help but effort involved depends how diggable your soil is. Fwiw it takes me about 3hrs to dig and sift a 5ft by 3ft space, and the bindweed & horsetail still grows in abundance.

I'm in Glasgow, so the soil is nearly always saturated with water. Good for stopping the plot drying out in summer, but shit for anything that involves digging/forking because the soil is always heavier and claggier.

Cover & pull then. I'm getting good weed suppression on some bits of my plot from layers of flattened bike boxes & manure. I may well be eating metal staples and parcel tape next year...

Areas I couldn't or hadn't covered are giving me plenty to do still.

Small block of 6 x Sweetcorn in for the Rats/Mice/Squirrels/Birds to enjoy, plus 2x giant pumpkins in waiting.

Planted through the cardboard which should rot down more as the year passes. The Sweetcorn is much greener than the pic reflects.

Under this is remnants of bindweed, couch grass and Horsetail, I dug out what I could a while back but there'll be plenty waiting still.

Excellent use of a Sunday afternoon with an 80km round trip to collect a push mower I got on eBay for £2.70. Now my walkways will never get overgrown again!

I’ve been doing the toilet roll seedling cells. They work so well

Took some more seedling a down to our plot today. Put them straight in the ground with netting over in the tunnel

The plot was looking quite bare so it’s nice to see it filling up

I’ll be planting some more leafy greens soon and some broccoli.

I did place an out for some asparagus crowns a few weeks ago. Checked the due date on my emails December 2020
