We've got bindweed in one of our beds - is the only solution to dig as much of it out as we can? Weed suppressing membrane doesn't seem to faze it as it just grows sideways til it finds the edge.

Digging will help but effort involved depends how diggable your soil is. Fwiw it takes me about 3hrs to dig and sift a 5ft by 3ft space, and the bindweed & horsetail still grows in abundance.
I'm in Glasgow, so the soil is nearly always saturated with water. Good for stopping the plot drying out in summer, but shit for anything that involves digging/forking because the soil is always heavier and claggier.
Cover & pull then. I'm getting good weed suppression on some bits of my plot from layers of flattened bike boxes & manure. I may well be eating metal staples and parcel tape next year...
Areas I couldn't or hadn't covered are giving me plenty to do still.
