Looking back to what I was doing when I ran my fastest the answer seems to be

Yes, it's apparent that when I was under 40 I was faster, although with that said my fastest 1000m (as part of a 5km Parkrun) is 3:51 (2015, I was 39), and my fifth fastest is 4:03, which was part of an 18Km run last week (I'm 43 until Friday).
