  • I've bought 3 (rim brake version) SPs over the years, used for audax and commuting (on separate bikes). The first one seems fucked and is not used anymore. The 2nd (built up the week before 2015 PBP) is on the commuter but has felt pretty bad for a while now. The third is still good and on the audax bike but has not had much use.

Bought the Shimano for a new commuter build. I believe you can replace bearings in them?

  • Replacing the bearings is a bit of a job IIRC - think it needs a full octagon spanner - and there's a risk of breaking the wire connecting the innards and the connector, but backing off the cones allows you to inject grease into the bearings and keep them happy. The main thing is to properly adjust the bearings once the wheel's built up - they're usually set too tight from the factory.
