Shimano XT 8000 disc hubs are cheap on freewheel atm... https://www.freewheel.co.uk/shimano-deore-xt-dh-t8000-3d-deore-xt-dynamo-front-hub-vardht8000?ps=OTM9MjMxNTgxJjE4ND0yMzIzNTc=&gclid=CjwKCAjwpqv0BRABEiwA-TySwQm-YtGtJnvCQfgo9pdoHR0aVchjAK4ioA9Hxo6QZaSO87X7_cctohoC994QAvD_BwE#93=231581&184=232357
£67.49
Ordered one last week and picked it up today at a lbs (i think freewheel is Madison so you can collect at alot of shops). Even the shop guy said it was a bargain.

very good price!

Had a couple of SP hubs over the years so thought this would be a good opportunity to try high end Shimano.

What was your experience with SP? Planning for a dirt touring wheel set build with dynamo, SON looks best but very expensive, wondering about SP PD-8 how durable it is, especially the bearings, and how efficient for battery charging.
-

Bearings are good, but the main thing with SON is the life time of servicing etc. I know people who have ridden thousands of miles on SP with no issue, I think it’s a difficult one really!
I use a Jtek dyno on 3 bikes, and could buy SON at distributor trade and only have 1 of those!

I've bought 3 (rim brake version) SPs over the years, used for audax and commuting (on separate bikes). The first one seems fucked and is not used anymore. The 2nd (built up the week before 2015 PBP) is on the commuter but has felt pretty bad for a while now. The third is still good and on the audax bike but has not had much use.
Bought the Shimano for a new commuter build. I believe you can replace bearings in them?

Replacing the bearings is a bit of a job IIRC - think it needs a full octagon spanner - and there's a risk of breaking the wire connecting the innards and the connector, but backing off the cones allows you to inject grease into the bearings and keep them happy. The main thing is to properly adjust the bearings once the wheel's built up - they're usually set too tight from the factory.

I heard that with Shimano only one side bearing is replaceable. Still considering to save up for SON, it will probably also depend on the rest of the build, if I choose a TA frameset then SON is "only" twice as expensive as SP, rather than 3 times as much for QR version.

I was thinking of remounting my IQX but the wires are now too short. How do I go about getting the wires longer? Connector of some sort? New wires inside light? Have Googled but not found anything yet
-
• #2836
Some variety of crimp connector to add an extra bit of wire to the too short bit?

I've got a 1.5w dynamo wheel.
thinking of getting an iq-xs to run with it as that specifically states it can work with 1.5w or 3w dynamo hubs. Would it be crazy to run a 3w light with a 1.5w hub? Would the hub even power the light?
What are my alternatives? -

specifically states it can work with 1.5w
I reckon you answered your own question there.
I just built a set, with an XS,with B&M mini rear, for an unusually rated 2.4W hub. Light is s bit flickery at low speed. I think I’m used to Luxus U seems to have an uber capacitor in it, light is full bright standlight as soon as the wheel moves just a tiny moment, so rather thsn hub power being as issue I think XS is just a bit more basic electronics-wise.
tldr you’ll be fine corny. From what I understand, 1.5 is fine for the LED era lights, the higher wattages are for halogen lights or whatever the older ones than those are called.

Some extension wires, a dash of solder and a bit of heatshrink would be my preferred lazy option.

I would put spade connectors on.
The Forumslader guy (thats the supposedly very good diy dynamo charger from a German nerd) has a german manual how to tune the iqx to make it work better with the charger.
I didn't get why and what the changes are, but its a nice (albeit German) teardown with pictures in pdf form that might tell you how much work new wires would be.
LINKSGEWINDE means left hand thread... -

Very unlikely I know but does anyone have a spare male SON coaxial connector?
I ordered the hub connector without the male part by mistake.

Wow from 'maybe I'll move my light to the wahoo mount' to 'the feasibility of your electrical set up is explored in this technical document only available in German' Bikes are such a headfuck sometimes
But of course the advice is appreciated. Maybe I'll just wait until the mudguard snaps and then burn that bridge when I come to it

OK this is much more my scene

I was, on Cycliste's winter bike. I just bent the XS mount until it fitted. It now fits.
Interesting headlamp angle you have there.

• #2847
yeah angle not final yet

Looking for one of these but so the light sits horizontally as designed, I have seen one somewhere!?

I have that one and ones similar, have searched alot. Never come across any with a different orientation.
Ok, guess I might be spending quite some euros just to connect my lights.
At least the rest is all there already.
