Try komoot; i have had exceptional results with it for route planning, i use the free tier

Zero notice of major product changes, plus a quick read through the less rabid comments on DCR etc. make me think they are:
(1) very close to running out of money. They haven't had VC funding since 2017.
(2) streamlining for quick sale to someone like Garmin

VeloViewer must be worried about this, that site will lose access to lots of functionality if the user is on the free tier of Strava.
(I pay VeloViewer but not Strava. There's not much crossover, I'm not paying VV for functionality that Strava offers.)

Oh yeah, forgot about their heatmaps. I'd just pay up for a month or so in order to use Strava's if I was doing another TCR, etc.

I pay for TrainerRoad and VV, not Strava. I get a lot of value from TR for training, a lot of enjoyment from VV from exploring, but can't see how I could get anything really beneficial out of paying for Strava going forward.
I like seeing segment info but am kinda past caring what others do relative to me. It's nice to see someone going well and to say well done, but you should be able to tell this from speed/power/whatever data. At the end of the day you're only competing against yourself out there.

Ye, this. They even allude to needing to make money in the press release/email they sent out.

What does VV do that's not dragged in from Strava? I looked at it years ago but didn't think it did enough to warrant paying for. Same as Strava, basically.
-
• #4859
Well, they're not a charity are they?
-
• #4860
In the VV blogpost they assume that the vast majority of their paid users also pay for strava...

Comparing segment times with my mates, and the route planner, are basically the only useful features. It's just a log of GPS traces now and I can get that on any of 50 other platforms. Not sure this is a good move.

Yep that and giving kudos to every commute and zwift ride is all i do

Ride with GPS is much better than Strava for building routes. It has many more features than the Strava route builder (including being able to use Google Street View within it).

Personally I find RWGPS route planner immensely frustrating. Took me ages to work out how to delete a control point, and it fails to route through some legal off-road routes however many control points I add. Whereas Strava can always be coerced.

I want a route builder that will give me rad off-road tours, what do I use?
-
• #4866
Neither is shunting money down the drain to run infra and pay developers while no one pays for their service. I much prefer RWGPS for route planning so Strava has always been a little novelty thing for me for uploading longer rides. Their heatmaps thing was made far better by @Yemble anyway. Wonder what their plans are for their APIs.

Really? There's literally a massive button on the right hand side that says "Add/Remove Control Point" If it was any more obvious you wouldn't be able to see the map :P
RWGPS allows you to free-route through anything if you want. That button (Draw Lines) is just above the invisible Add/Remove Control Point button :)

I'm kinda on-board with this. 'Free' services that just bombard you with ads or are painful to use due to tracking your every mouse move or scroll on their platform are awful and I'm not unhappy about being able to pay to not have 'wahoo' plastered on rides or inline ads in the feed. They seem to be doing decent stuff, the maps and chronological feed for example. I still don't know if it comes out as good value but yeah, don't necessarily think it's a terrible thing overall.

I enjoy strava for the fact it seems a lot more social than other platforms.
While I enjoy garmin connect its nowhere near as user friendly as Strava.

By now you would have decide whether Strava is a worthwile app.
For me, its pretty good community tool. Frankly amazed they managed 11 years thusfar.
I think they have made a lot of changes and updates which make it worthwile. It has by far the biggest community. Komoot is ace (you need to pay tho), RWGPS very outdated / clunky, but still worthwhile free.

Not giving developers a headsup is a dick move; I can see intervals.icu isn't syncing but trainerroad is

I’d happily pay £2/mo for the free version of strava. I wouldn’t pay £10/mo for the fancy version.
Edit: turns out £10 is more than the fancy version costs. I’m fucking confused by the ridiculous 3 tier system tho.

Same

So how about £4 for the fancy?
-
• #4875
I’ve just had a proper look. I’m fucking confused about the 3 tier system tbh. Not sure I’d be wanting to stump up more than £25/year.
I’d guess they’ll try add a virtual/ indoor training element try improve the freshness fitness to tailor that like a coach to become a one stop shop type situation.
Expanding to other sports might be any needed distraction at present but I say this as a non regular skier.
