In this case though, the scales in question are designed specifically for heat and water environments (and in some cases aluminium not plastic) so I'd expect them to last way longer than my 'not even slightly waterproof' druggie scales.

Though my not even slightly waterproof druggie scales were bought around 2009 for less than £10 and are still going strong.
Oops sorry - only a few months so far so I can’t comment. I don’t know if paying 3-5x for scales will have a huge effect on durability. I mean we’re talking about consumer electronics in the kitchen right? There aren’t any serviceable parts or anything that wears out in either, the premium is for brand, aesthetics etc
Edit: maybe warranty I guess
