Best place to order fabric/hardware online?
-
• #478
I’ve been ordering from https://www.profabrics.co.uk/
If you search Mack Workshop on YouTube he links to a bunch of suppliers in his first video tutorial.

I've been using https://www.extremtextil.de/en/ not sure about their shipping rates to the UK though.

Here's my first attempt at some bike luggage, a saddle / bar bag made from X-Pac VX21 with a floating liner.
Eventually I'll have a rear rack to move it away from the seat post and give it more stability.

Lovely.
I've always thought that a carradice like design out of lightweight material would be a winner. Looks like it's what you've gone for here.
What does a floating liner mean?
-
• #484
It’s basically a clone of a Fabio’s Chest so I can take any credit for the design.
The liner is another bag inside the outer bag, they are only attached along the top edge. The thinking behind it is that water can’t seep through a seam and get inside because the liner isn’t attached to the outer seams.
I also used a silicone seam sealant on all internal seams as extra waterproofing but I don’t know how effective it will be.

Thanks, next project is to make a narrower version for the front and maybe some small zipped accessory pouches that can attach to the top flap.

Been doing some digging this morning:
There's this facebook page with a recent video on how to make a stem bag:
https://www.facebook.com/groups/crwheelers
That's from a woman who also runs this https://www.dillpicklegear.com/picklejar/ and she has a few DIY patterns here: https://www.dillpicklegear.com/news-links-and-rides/
There's also a randoneer bag pattern avaliable via wayback machine here:

Nice.
I've got plans (entirely in my head) of a rando bag with removable picnic hamper internals (cool bags, section for plates etc).

Bit of guidance on a similar bag here too

That is superb.. super job..

Really tidy. Did you tape the seams up or anything?
-
• #492
I used McNett Seam Grip on the seams and bar tacks. I brushed it on as best I could but didn’t worry too much about doing a perfect job.
Tape might have been easier for the flat panels with bar tacks but I think most of the seams would have been too fiddly and bulky to tape.

Wondering if someone can help me source some replacement buckles before I try my luck with the manufacturer.
The broken buckle is made by ITW Nexus and, search as I might, I can't identify the correct model as a replacement (let alone source half their offerings). Anyone happen to have tried sourcing these 25mm side release buckles with a solid central prong? I keep turning up variations on the top buckle, or squared-off designs.
I'd rather avoid restiching new buckles and will probably go for the 'field repair' style ones as they're only being used for side compression on an old Belk pack.

There now. Forum upload was not being my friend :(

These are the only field repair types I have. Left is UTX D-Flex Stealth, middle and right are ITW NX

Thanks - I'm thinking just full replacement with field style is the way to go rather than searching for the correct replacement "male" sections.
Any opinion on the central, or offset split on the field replacement options? assume central is slightly more secure but a little harder to fit?
-
• #498
Yea it depends on how tight the original webbing is (where it’s stitched). Either work fine. Haven’t had any central ones slip off or anything. How many do you need? PM me I can stick a couple in the post if that’s all you need.

Thanks for the offer, I managed to find a 5 G-buckles(?) at the bottom of the old misc-outdoor-sewing box. Seem to be working ok at the moment.

I'm looking to buy some thread, for a sewing machine, to use on webbing, denim, rubber backed cotton etc. So, the stronger stuff.
Anyone have a recommendation for brand/supplier?
The straps are Voile straps, I got them from https://www.justpedal.nl/en/search?controller=search&orderby=position&orderway=desc&search_query=voile&submit_search= . @Harry.Major also sells them here https://wizard.works/collections/use-shoulder-strap , might be cheaper in the UK.
Don't have much in the way of pictures, but as it's pretty much a direct copy of the Outer Shell strap you can look at theirs here: https://www.outershelladventure.com/shop/camera-strap All I have is a picture from the fitting session.
