  • Hi guys, I’m pretty new to the site. Just wondering if there are any wheel builders on here who offer their services to forum members? And is this thread the best place to ask or would the buy and sell place be best?

    I’m looking for a set of silver disc wheels, road 700c 130 rear hub spacing. I’m finding that silver road disc wheels are pretty rare! They’re all black these days. Slightly under 2kg would be nice. Don’t need to be super light though. Just strong enough for normal use plus carrying some panniers occasionally. This is for my casual/light touring bike (Genesis Croix de Fer). Bike weighs around 10.5kg, I weigh about 85kg, max load of carry would be around 15kg - so wheels that can take up to 110-120kg.

  • Email DCR he has good stock of silver disc rims. Are you sure the rear is 130? Most disc hubs are 135. I can build wheels for £15 each. Based in SW london

    Are you sure rear spacing is 130mm and disc brakes? This is pretty rare, usually 135mm

    If you're not after tubeless and as it is for a CdF, there are a few rim options.
    @cycleclinic of the forum does builds and stocks these in silver on his site: https://thecycleclinic.co.uk/collections/rims/products/kinlin-xr22rts-disc-brake-rims-in-silver-700c

    However remember you don't have to use a disc specific rim.

    @broken_777 also does builds and I can attest to his excellent quality and may be able to get the rims above.

  • Sorry, yes 135mm. I was sure the Croix de Fer had road wheel spacing but just checked and yes it’s 135. It’s been a few years since I bought wheels for this!

  • I've just done my second shakedown of the LB rims I built yesterday, and realised (upon reading the manual in the box) that they're meant to be built in a certain way according to stickers on the rim. Now, typically, both wheels are built differently as in my rush to build them I didn't really think about what the spoke direction sticker meant. I've done 70 miles on them and they're fine, front went out of true by 0.5mm, rear stayed perfect.

    Does anyone which way is the 'correct' way? And is it that big a deal that I need to re build one of the wheels? Nipples are polyax so have a rounded head anyway.

  • Turkish has built me 3 solid and (still) true wheels FWIW

  • Each rim is sided, and it is to do with the drilling of the spoke holes in terms of offset from center. Sometimes on deeper carbon rims the hole on the rim surface is centered, but the shoulder on which the nipple sits inside is offset.

    If you look at Roger Musson's book. He describes "type 1" and "type 2 rim patterns.

    I'd recommend relacing.

  • The wheel in the first picture is correct, the second has the spokes going in the 'wrong' direction. I've no idea whether it matters or not.

  • Yeah, they're not asymmetric in the sense that they go left/right, which is what threw me!

  • First picture is correct then, so the spoke should come out from centre in the same direction as the arrow? See, I had thought it would be the other way round, that the spoke should be in line with the arrow. The manual wasn't very clear but maybe I'm just being dense.

    So which of these is right, just to clarify? you're saying b, I think @danstuff
