Sweet. When the world gets normal, you might want to put that in some plastic conduit to protect it.

I got some of the cable that is designed for burying so is fine naked but thanks for the tip.
I originally ordered some regular cable with the long range AP and only after I realised it would need to be an outdoor AP that also requires outdoor cable. - If like me you came to a cycling forum for networking tips and are reading this before embarking down a similar path then hopefully this will save someone some time :D.

Ubiquiti users - I've lost a Switch, and I can't find it on the network
What I mean to say is, I can't connect to it over http / ssh / ping
I have 3 switches, connected like the below picture - I can see Switch 1 and Switch 2 with no trouble
Anything I connect to Switch 3 does actaully work though, so it's performing as expected
Have I confused things by daisy-chaining too many things together?.
They're all Toughswitches - two 5 ports, and one 8 port, connected to an Edgemax router.

Switch 3 wasn't actually static IP and has gone to a different IP?
Switches are switches... it still works. Lack of visibility is it's controller not being where you expect it (the IP of it) or the controller having crashed (it can happen even on embedded systems).
It won't affect the capability of a switch, because that's just raw hardware.

Looking for a few suggestions and recommendations, on the following things. I currently have a Technicolour TG589vac router with SE providing the broadband.
There are two macbook pros in the flat and the wifi, or more accurately the internet connection regularly drops out. It can usually be resolved by turning wifi off and on, but not always. I never really bothered that much, but now we are working from home it's more of an issue with zoom calls etc. Any ideas what could be causing it? Generally the router shows that it still has internet, so it seems to be the mac communication with the router that is the issue.
I also have a QNAP NAS connected to the router for work backup (I'm a photographer) and now need to get a new one as it's almost full. Should I be looking at a new more capable router, or a separate switch for the qnaps? Don't want to spend almost 4 figures on storage and then create a bottleneck. I usually backup jobs via ethernet, but access random files over the wifi. Seldom do I work directly from the qnap.

Right, getting fucked off with my WiFi. My iPhone does that thing where it shits out and hangs between the mixed 2ghz and 5ghz signal. I’ve split the WiFi so it’s broadcasting two separate signals and that seemed to help for a bit but it’s doing it again. It’s noticeably faster on the 5ghz signal but it keeps dropping the connection and it disappears for ages and I can’t see it to reconnect. The 2ghz signal is always there and stays connected, but it is slower and there’s a delay before it does anything, which I don’t get on the 5ghz. Plus it regularly just hangs and does nothing until I toggle the phone WiFi off and on.
I’ve tried to move the WiFi onto another channel for both signals but it doesn’t seem to help. Makes no difference if I’m close or far from the router. It’s the standard router that comes with Vodafone/BT/Plusnet etc. No other device has any problems connecting. All the laptops, both Chromecasts and OH’s Android phone are fine.
Anyone got any idea what I need to do?

In the end I just went for one of the (discontinued I believe) outdoor unifi - https://www.amazon.co.uk/Ubiquiti-UniFi-AC-Outdoor-Mesh/dp/B01NAAWOGO/ref=sr_1_2?dchild=1&keywords=unifi+outdoor&qid=1588415824&sr=8-2
Mounted on the side of the house and now have wifi flooding the whole property.
Do you have any photos of it installed?
All the online ones are just the product and would be curious to check the real world WAF.
Cheers.

That makes sense.
After nmapping and pinging a few thousand addresses, I just reset it & took the opportunity to update the firmware.
Then I lost on of the other switches...
It's back now, though, and it means I can now troubleshoot a dead / dying NAS
Thanks!

I've been using one of these netgear wireless extenders/repeaters
https://www.netgear.com/home/products/networking/wifi-range-extenders/EX6120.aspx
which is extending the range of my ubiquity unifi ac lite ap to the study. Router and ac lite are in the front room, a couple of concrete walls away from the study.
Missus is using the wifi in there and has been having issues with the signal saying it's good but then web pages are loading slowly or not at all.
Since lockdown is going to be going on for a while and she'll be working from home throughout, whats the best solution to getting wifi to cover that area better?Should I run an ethernet cable from router to the netgear extender? Would need a splitter or switch, as I'm already running a cable to the desktop in the study, so would just branch off that.
Or do I purchase another ubiquiti unifi ac lite and either run an ethernet cable to that, or use it as an extender to the current wifi network.
Ideally I'd like a solution that isn't too expensive right this minute, with the option of spending some money over the next couple of months to make the wifi cover the whole flat and be stable enough for my missus to continue working from home. (currently not enjoying my role as IT support in my own home)
Any thoughts let me know

@rogan - this may not be what you're looking for, but my apartment is quite similar in shape to yours. It's 1000sq ft so on the more sizeable side. Using your layout, my desk is to the right of the bedroom door and my router is on the green rectangle, so not a great route for wireless signals.
I was using my basic Netgear router's built in WiFi and it was awful. Was fine in a 300sq ft apartment in NYC but not so much here. I tried a range extender which was just a total waste of time. It would do that irritating thing where it would say I have signal but 'no internet connection.' If it did have signal, I'd get 0.5Mbps down.
I didn't want to try a mesh setup as it's total overkill. In the end, I settled on a Netgear Nighthawk Ac1900. It's plugged into my router and I disabled my router's WiFi. So it's literally being used as an AP. I now get 230Mbps, which is only 10Mbps less than I do connected to my router with Ethernet. The signal never drops, latency is always low, I play FPS's online and never have lag. I really rate it. The signal is so strong that my phone stays connected to it when we're in the car park two stories beneath our apartment and when I arrive back from a bike ride at least 200m away from the AP, through multiple apartments.

interesting, a good quality AP would probably solve the issue while still being able to keep it 'hidden' away where id ideally have it.
I got some powerline adapters off of @amey (socially dinstanced collection of course) and currently have my work laptop and my portal plugged into ethernet at my desk from one of them, and my network streamer on the wifi plugged into the other.
so far so good. wifi still meh from the sofa, but its only really been a problem for video calls which i take at my desk

Fair fair fair. I didn't bother with them as I'd read so many mixed things. Fortunately for me, I got all of my home office stuff before COVID really ramped up so it was also one of the cheapest 'good' WiFi options. Good luck!

today is only day one so ill report back next week...
the chromecast is noticeably worse but can live with that
-
• #490
Bite the bullet pal. Sounds like the powerlines are making you compromise in a couple of places... I tried to save cash but am very glad I spent $120 instead of $50. Totally headache free.

I'm going to try one of these next week.
https://www.argos.co.uk/product/5585575?clickSR=slp:term:tp-link:2:34:1
Should be more stable than an extender, since it uses the powerline to have a "wired" connection to the router

Mmmmhh interesting.

if my wifi extenders only do 2.4, is it worth turning off the 5ghz band on the main router?
and if i have multiple access points on the same SSID, should they use the same, or different channels?

Does anyone need any powerline kit?
I have the following available, except only one mains pass through adapter now. Not two as pictured.

Is that a wifi one on the right? Dibs if so!
Edit: is it just a repeater or does it work like a proper powerline?

There isnt alot to see really. It looks exactly like the stock photos but with a toe strap and an ethernet cable, The other mount is for mounting with screws which cannot be seen anyway.
What is a WAF?

I’ve managed to get hold of a unifi ap lr.
I’d like to swap the ac lite I have for the lr, is it as simple as disconnecting one and connecting the other?
Or are there more things I need to do via the controller to make it work?
Ideally I’d like to keep the WiFi networks downtime to as little as possible..
I’m awaiting a PoE adaptor for the unifi lr so can’t run both of them at the same time, currently.. -

WAF
Wife Approval Factor.
It's a technical hi-fi term, but it can be applied to most things.
Yeah just had to suck it up and run the ethernet. Straight out of my PC cupboards external wall. Tacked along the house and then secured 4 metres off the ground with a pedal toe strap around a waste pipe.
