I wasn't going to, but I just saw the pictures on the Guardian webpage of them and I'm now tempted. I think 1990 was the last time I (or possibly my grandfather by proxy) had a go...

Ever wondered what a Monte Carlo simulation of the cost of filling your sticker book would look like?
http://codehesive.com/worldcupstickers/
(>1100 packs to complete the book in the result I just ran)
Assuming Balotelli did that properly it must have taken many many many hours... unless there's a particularly narcissistic swapsies market out in Brazil at the minute.

MiniGB (Y1) doing Euro 2016 Panini stickers and utterly gripped by them. She's getting good at the flags and badges.
A quick Monte Carlo simulation shows that one person on their own would need to buy, on average, 4850 stickers (at 10p each) to get all 680 of them, but working in a group of 20 (her classmates and other friends) that drops to about 1260 stickers (still double the bare minimum).
1260 stickers is 2 or 3 packs a day (19 a week to be specific) for the 90 days between now and the final. I'll cover the cost by cutting out 2 or 3 pints a week.
Boxes of 100 packs of stickers (RRP £50) on eBay for under £45 with P&P.
[ The last Panini stickers I did were Mexico '86 and Italia '90. ]

Anyone for swaps by post (Euro2016)?
Got to the stage where we have more spares (260) than daughter needs (204) to finish her album and people to swap with have tailed off.

Posted a free ad on gumtree to swap stickers by post (easier to deal with than trying to reply to other people's posts). 8 responses within half an hour of putting the ad up, 12 within a day.
Some people obviously just want shot of them. One person sent 17 stickers in exchange for two shinies.
Down from needing 204 to needing 42 (26 of those are shiny) so I'll probably just buy the rest from Panini directly when the dust has settled and all of the post has come in. Should be done in time for the tournament to begin, and only half the people in the album squads are actually playing.

Thursday March 22 for Russia 2018.
Finished off Euro 2016 with the help of laststicker.com before the end of the tournament, daughter enjoyed receiving lots of post.
Hopefully Panini will be doing their offer of a box of 100 packs with 10 personalised stickers added randomly. That should get us off to a good start (although I will ration the packs out over the first month or so).

Russia 2018: 682 stickers and 80p per pack of 5. 60% increase. Gouging gits.
Minimum cost = 682*0.16 = £109.12
Monte Carlo simulation time...
~/personal/panini$ ./panini.pl 1 | grep people people=1 stickers_per_album=682 cutoff=682 avg_bought=4839 avg_bought_per_person=4839 avg_first_dup=33 ~/personal/panini$ ./panini.pl 20 | grep people people=20 stickers_per_album=682 cutoff=682 avg_bought=25223 avg_bought_per_person=1261 avg_first_dup=32
Going alone: ~4850 stickers at 16p each = £776.00
Completing 20 albums (i.e. amongst a group of 20 people): ~1260 per person at 16p each = £201.60A few of my daughter's friends are collecting too, so we'll have a small pool to swap with (it won't take long until they are banned at school, happens every time with everything collectable/swappable) and then I'll use laststicker.com again which worked really well last time (might start a bit earlier this time). I'll see if I can do it by spending less than £150 including postage.
(~16 and a bit weeks until the WC final, so that's ~£10 a week, just need to cut out two beers a week to cover the cost.)
[EDIT] Packs/boxes of stickers available for a lot less than 80p/pack on eBay. I'll also look to get a personalised box of 100 packs from mypanini.co.uk with my daughters picture on (they print 10 unique stickers with your supplied photo/text and then stick them in random packs in the box).

Need just 11 stickers to finish it.
Got down to needing ~130 and stuck all of the needs and spares into laststicker.com and have done about 15 deals on there but now I'm down to trading 2 or 3 stickers at a time and getting responses to only one in every 5 requests I send out. Will give it another week (I'd like to complete it by swapping only) and if ICBA any more then I'll buy the remaining ones direct from Panini and all my spares can go to my niece.

One of my daughter's friends dropped off a Premiership Panini album and so we're no choice but to do it. Box of 100 packets of stickers ordered (20% off on panini.com) and they'll be rationed out as rewards for good behaviour.

May not be the case anymore but used to get a good deal on packs from Costco when me and my mates used to do stickers at Uni.

About 180 left to get (out of the 636 in the album) and we've only been swapping with one other person.
Have ~25 packs left to open and ~50 spares so far which gets us almost there. I'll start using laststicker.com once we've swapped everything we can with my daughter's friend, and then order the last ones directly from Panini rather than spending hundreds just to get the last few.
I'm collecting world cup stickers. Yeah? Laugh it up, that bad boy is gonna be my pension in 40 years, you'll see. Anyway, I can't seem to find many people as astutely entrepreneurial as me above the age of 10, and I worry about approaching them to swap stickers / share sweets / see my puppy etc, so who's got some swaps? I've now got 55 of the bastards. No shineys but I do have a couple of half stadiums, ooh yeah.
