    Intriguing. I was thinking up and down each of the Wimbledon alps would help - you can cut across some of them to only do the steepest part. Sure there is a bit more to be had round there, and then miss out some of the other shallower climbs earlier / later.

    Do we know what the record is for the 20 mile elevation challenge? I imagine a variation on the Leith Hill Octopus is probably as close as you could manage with a chunky ride out from Kingston.

  • Pretty much exactly that - down and up the steepest parts only. It's the gradient that counts in this challenge, plus proximity of the next lump.

    No idea what the record is, but I'd be looking for a few long steep climbs on the same hill, switching roads at the summit rather than the base, assuming they're closer together at the top. I've plotted a quick Leith Hill route that does that to an extent:
