  • My Genesis Fugio stripped to the bare metal. I’m going to reroute some of the cables and then paint in the hammerite too

  • Gear cable stops removed. Won’t ever use a double on this bike so will replace with single cable stops on the downtube
I was going to move the brake cable too but just to under the top tube. That seems like a lot of hassle to move them an inch though so I’ll leave it

  • Stem's nice. Hammerite looks like anti-theft paste though

  • It’s a bit agricultural for sure but it’ll be fine from a distance. It’s only my all weather commuter

  • I did a better job with hammerite than this and i am not even a artisanal framebuilder

  • That makes two of us. I’m not an artist/painter either so 🤷🏼‍♂️

  • I’m not an artist/painter

    You dont say

  • What did you use to strip the frame? I have a couple I need to do and Nitromors is like baby formula these days.

  • Just a £1.50 paint stripper from wilkos and a little wire brush. It’s not strong stuff. You put it on thick and a little paint bubbles after a couple hours. Brush that off, rinse with water, repeat. Took a couple days of coming back and doing 4 or 5 repeats

  • Damn, pretty sure I have that too but its not doing much. Maybe I'm just being lazy, will try again today. Hows the frame?

  • Just take them to somewhere like Armourtex for sandblasting, it's not worth the hassle of trying to strip the paint by hand without the old Nitromors.

  • Armoutex charge 90 quid to strip these days... yeah, nah.

  • This is what I found. My patience wore thin after a few hours.

  • Wow. Powdershack is worth asking

  • The only chemical paint stripper that I've found is any good these days is Starchem Synstrip. It's properly evil stuff, and does the job as it still contains dichloromethane, the stuff which they used to use in old Nitromors. Langlow Paint Strip Pro is OK, and much better than modern Nitromors, but it's not as good as Starchem.

I generally don't use either though, as there's a chap in a shed just round the corner from me that'll sandblast bike frames for £15-20 a pop, with a 1-2 day turnaround, which makes spending hours slopping paint stripper everywhere seem an even more futile exercise.

  • Is the frame/stripper cold from being stored in a basement/shed etc? Could be the reaction being lazy not you.

  • Good shout, I was trying in the depths of winter...

  • Hows the frame?

Shamefully I’ve still got half a frame here. I’ve given up trying to find a flat mount fixture for placing it right and considering just buying new dropouts which have the brake integrated so I can get it finished

  • If you’ve got a hub, a rotor and a caliper then you’ve got a fixture.

I now have a shiter of a tektro caliper from the recycling place and a £5 hub from the crc sale for this but have done it with good components and a bit more care too.

  • Anvil have closed shop, and AFAIK the Bicycle Academy fixture is still a work in progress, but it appears Incepi is up and running again. Probably your best bet if you need a FM fixture.

  • Starchem synstrip works amazingly / terrifyingly well.

  • Redoing the fender mount/seatstay bridge and will be adding a chainstay bridge on my genesis

  • Need to finish the frame in the stand as I'm waiting on a quote for an overoversize Zona tubeset for a track frame and somewhat matching appearance Spirit HSS tubeset for a road disc frame.

The Genesis is painted and just needs a rear derailleur that was bought on here but never turned up...
    Will picture tomorrow

Anyone interested in buying an Enve CX fork or a Red22 groupset?

  • Two quick questions (possibly stupid ones):
Is it tapered and does it have cantis?
If No & yes I'm game!

  • Haha the opposite I’m afraid. Tapered disc
