• What I took from the update speech is that the onus is now firmly on us, the people. Once both the infection and death rates start to rise Johnson can reluctantly re-impose stricter rules while saying it’s our fault because we weren’t alert enough, whatever the fuck that means.

The government’s handling of it all has been an unmitigated shitshow. No coherent policy allied with no real enforcement of what little policy there is has been typical of Johnson’ a attitude. He’s reacted to the tabloid media, not scientific advice. The state of the Mail, Sun et al last week was a disgrace, the Sun going as far to say that pubs could open beer gardens, ffs. How can you ease a lockdown if you haven’t actually had one? My son lives in Vietnam but is currently in Langkawi where he went for a 5 day break as it all kicked off and he’s been stuck there ever since. Shops closed, no travel in or out, no leaving your apartment, or his his case a tiny airb&b; when he did he was threatened with arrest and a fine. They’ve had 5 confirmed cases of Covid on the island, and no deaths. Vietnam, where’s he’s trying to get back to, has full lockdown. Army and police on the streets, a massive fine, jail and deportation if you’re a foreigner awaits you if you’re caught outside. Vietnam has had no deaths from Covid. None.

Except for a trip to the shops every few days, my mate hasn’t left his flat in Madrid for three months, nor has my mate in Dubai. My mate in Paris took a pic from his apartment window on Wednesday morning. The streets were deserted, with police, TSG and Army enforcing the law. That’s a fucking lockdown. I rode back from work on Saturday afternoon and it was like a normal weekend afternoon, people and traffic everywhere. We don’t have the police to enforce the half-arsed restrictions anyway. People, certainly in areas of London, are just taking the piss. This is why we’ve had approaching 34,000 deaths while Germany, with a population some 15% larger than the UK, has had 7,200 deaths, nearly 5 times less. I’m a mechanic, and even I can see a link here, tho I’ve no idea how I’m supposed to “control” a fucking virus. But hey, it’s down to people like me to do it.

So let’s all party in the park and do the conga and whatever, and try not to be too sad when granny dies when the inevitable second wave hits, because that’s the price of freedom, eh?

I give up, I really do.

Vietnam is an interesting one. When I was there, the safety and wellness of its population never really struck me as one of the governments top priorities, so their 'crush this shit' approach is curious. Cynically, i) it's a great opportunity for the party to re-assert their power, and ii) their numbers are probably propaganda. And iii) how they 'get out' of where they are now is a good question - they will seriously need to up their capability to test / quarantine when / if international travel opens back up.

    But we will see.

I read this to say the Vietnam War has had no deaths from Covid. None.

And i was like, yes, that is a true statement... Odd, but true.
