  • Stunning frame. I had a Superprestige in the same finish but red - selling it is still my greatest ever regret! An absolute joy to ride. So smooth and light.

Might work with a silver Ahead stem?

Also intrigued with the red frame hanging up behind - what is it?!

  • Without wanting to hijack the thread obviously but here's another example of the Superleggero working nicely with a classic frame.

  • You tease.

This thread is throwing up some bangers.

  • That is a smart stem, it fits in well. The reason I chose the prime doyenne is the clean lines. A lot of modern stems can look too bulky for me. It's also quite angular which goes well with the ciamillo brake profiles etc. Retro bikes are either all curves or all lines it seems and I wanted to go with lots of lines on this

Perhaps if I get some more cash to spend on the build I could look at getting a D S stem. They cost a lot more than I spent on this one! Would also want to get rid of the branding. I'm trying to stick to no or minimal branding

  • Yeah can't wait to get out on it.

The red frame is an Alan Competizione from '82. Lovely frame both to look at and ride. I haven't found any of this issues some others have had in early aluminium glued and screwed frames

  • It's just an issue of balance IMO. Having a 31.8 handlebar is all well and good if you have OS tubes on the bike (like the lovely purple one above and the Donohue) but when the bike is all skinny classic tubes it looks unbalanced.

  • Anyway, lovely frame and I'm sure it will be great when it's finished regardless of stem choice.

  • For what it's worth I went with Nitto Dynamic stem/ Mod 185 bars on my 90's 'nag with Campag ergos. As stiff as I need them to be on a 25 year old steel frame.

  • Lovely frameset

  • Thanks. Polished it last night. Came up lovely. What do people find is the best way to cover small patches of bare metal? Any clear coats that are particularly effective?

  • Clear nail varnish, let dry repeat then polish again

  • Good shout thanks. I was thinking airfix paint so basically the same thing!

  • Started painting in the scratches etc today. White is looking good, blue isn't quite right but with a few coats and sanding it will come out looking smart. Some of the logos etc need work, I'm tempted to free hand paint the lines back in has anyone does this? Also need to find a solution for some chrome issues on the fork. There is a small indentation and the chrome has been worn away around it. Is there anything I can redo the chrome with? Obviously not real chrome but a substitute.

  • Give the chrome a wire wool clean then use a clear lacquer touch up stick .Here's a good video

  • Looking forward to seeing it built up.

Saw a Tecno in this colourway being built up in Gamma TD in Edinburgh last year and have been looking for one since.

  • Finally back on the Tommasini, some pictures coming soon. I've stripped the loose lacquer from the carbon derailleur parts and repainted with clear modelling glue. It is working fine, except for marks from the brush. Any advice? Anything anyone has used before that comes up well? I'd take the carbon parts off and spray them except as far as I can tell I can't take the derailleurs fully apart. They are campag 11 speed record for the.. record.

  • Have you tried nail varnish?

I’ve actually just ordered a broken Sr11 RD with the intention of replacing the cage - I believe it’s just a case of removing these two circlips and then the cage should come away. For spraying you could then just mask the rear titanium parts of the cage.

I haven’t done it myself yet but will be trying it soon and can let you know how easy/hard it is

  • My worry with nail varnish in this case is that it is basically the same as clear modelling lacquer with the same sort of applicator so will most probably still leave marks. I'm going to get the lacquer touch up pen as mentioned above so will try that too. Masking and spraying isn't a bad shout, I could rub back any plastic that gets a bit of lacquer on.

  • So I took apart the sr11 FD and it was surprisingly easy, all I used was a small flat head screwdriver to pop off the little circlips (recommend holding it all in a paper towel so you don’t lose the tiny little clips). Then you just push the pins out (pictured) and the cage can just come away.

From there the whole mechanism is really easy to clean. I haven’t put it back together yet as I’m waiting for a replacement cage from a donor mech but I don’t expect that will be any more difficult.

  • Good to know. Might be able to get some spray on lacquer to it then.

  • That frame will be banging in the sunshine, can’t wait to see it built! Good luck

  • I'm missing the bottom race for the headset on this, it's an old campagnolo record. Any suggestions?
