  • Definitely fun (well, I've done it as far as Grays) but it's really slow with lots of great urban decay and Thameside grim/fun. Rainham marshes are actually nice though. Dunno what the route does after Grays...

  • Has anyone got a good Magnificent 7 Cemeteries route that they could possibly share? Obviously i can just do one on google maps but if there is a nice route around them all that would be smashing. TIA

  • Does anyone have an off road route from London to Cambridge?

I was convinced there was such a route similar to the downs link heading south, but no amount of googling has revealed it.

    Cheers
    Thomas

  • I have no idea how offroad this is but a quick search on RWGPS reveals

  • had a quick look at this on OS maps, it's actually not a bad route.
might run it as a forum trip some time

  • 1/3 of it is on the canal.. usually busy for my taste, particularly now

  • Looks like you could piece together a bunch of walking trails:
    Meridian Trail (untill Epping)
    Forest Way (untill Bishop's Stortford)
    Harcamlow Way (until The Dell)
then you jump to the Icknield Way until you hit the Roman Road past Linton.

I drafted something below. I'd expect no less than half a dozen of gates, some barking dogs (and owners) ad a few bits to be re-routed depending on conditions. I'd definitely give it a go! (or please report if you do)

  • Absolutlely superb!!
    Thank you.

I have a friend in Cambridge who I intend to visit post lockdown and fancied something to get the bigger tyres rolling on.

I'll definitely let you know how it goes

  • Thank you. I didn't know about ride with GPS until today

  • Full disclaimer, I simply drafted it after you asked, never rode it, review the route as much as you can and have a few backup plans (can always follow the NCR 1, thne 50, then 11 to Cambridge).
As you've learned RWGPS is your friend.
But still let me know ;)

PS. If it's post lockdown and you're looking for company, I'd be keen to ride it as well and come back on a train, when all of that will be normal again

  • If you fancy heading south instead i know a great off road route to Brighton

  • can you share please?

  • here's the route plus a vid to give you a flavour of the riding

    Start Button

  • Love that route, the downs link is a blast, probably gets you to the south downs faster than any road ride! What was that herd of dogs?

  • I think it's a pack of fox hounds. The main thing I remember from them is an overpowering smell of dog: good doggy, doggy, doggy.

That route takes you up a great climb at the end, a nice narrow climb up Fulking Hill (and yes that is what you will be thinking all the way) instead of the horrible wide, chalky climb that the official BHF route takes you.

  • Man, I can't wait till all this shit is over to do both these rides.

  • That's great giofox.
Thank you for taking the time to have a look at routes.

Yeah I imagine I'll be trying this in late summer (all things considered)

  • Thanks for this!

  • Yeah tell me about it

  • no probs, enjoy ~(eventually)

  • I think it's a pack of fox hounds.

Oh. giofox had better watch out, then.

  • Ok, you got the I-have-a-new-route-to-try bug in my head and couldn't shake it off, so went out and rode 75% of it, the remaining bit is the Icknield Way and the Roman Road, which needs no checking. Not only it's rideable, it's ace! I love it, it's up there in the top 10 of my routes from London. Only a few tweaks to make (already made in the version below). No gates, nice mix of bridleways, farm tracks and singletracks, not much tarmac, no major climbs.

I rode out and back in a loop, Strava ride here, with many more pictures. Both ways are feasible to Cambridge, but the return leg of the loop has more farm tracks, not the best on a gravel bike, I'd recommend the route below as is.
