• You know how it goes - you're changing the bars and stem on you partner's bike at 6:00 in the evening and the f**king stem is 5mm narrower than the one you're replacing and you have no spare spacers.

    Does anyone (who potentially also lives in SE London) have a 1 1/4 inch headset spacer they could throw at me from a safe distance? (In exchange for a beer or two). Preferably 10mm - but I'll take anything right now.

  • Sounds like your sorted..

    I guess in a pinch you can use the old stem as a spacer to help you set the preload. Then remove it when the new one is clamped down. Then just rock around with a bit of steerer peeking out over the top of your stem :)

  • Thanks @MCamb - all sorted now. Would that work? I can't seem to get my head around the physics!

  • Put the other stem on above the one you want to keep, install top cap (compresses headset), tighten bottom stem (keeps the system compressed), remove top cap, remove top stem, install top cap.
