Did a ride on them yesterday through some mixed gravel, pavement and mud. They performed well and aren’t sluggish on the roads, I love em so far. I got them directly from Rene Herse https://www.renehersecycles.com/

Made a fitting cable hanger myself, finished the build and took it out for a ride. 29 years ago I was lusting over these iconic bikes, now I finally know how they ride.

so how do they ride? alpinestars cromega has been on my want list for ages.

I was really surprised how agile and nimble they are. Very nervous too. We have some lower hills here (Flanders - region of the Tour of Landers) but no mountains and going offroad with this kind of bikes is just fun.

Lovely Rockhopper

Wonderful, liaising with a local bike shop to get them ordered :)
Shipping directly from Rene is eye watering.

Brilliant in mud.
So much tyre clearance and your bodyweight is right over the rear wheel so you get great traction, loads of fun and very chuckable - short wheelbase & steep HT -

Yes, it really rides completely different than most (vintage) mountainbikes I own. It's very vivid and corners extremely light.

any chance I can turn it into a single speed ?

Nice bike. Depending on condition and spec of the wheels (they're mismatched and I would guess the front is lower quality maybe) I'd say it's worth it. Single speed will be easy with a chain tensioner, almost impossible without as you'd have to magic ratio it.

Thanks, It looks pretty rusty on the frame but I guess it's fine as its going to be my daily rat bike.
I might want to change a lot of it so I don't mind changing the wheels as well. Will make it more urban.

Depending on condition I’m sure you can recoup some cost for the XT derailleurs.
Just please keep that stem!

Look at this bullshit
It's ragged 521 rims on Ringle hubs with plain gauge spokes and a dirty cassette with used rotors. 3 pics, barely worth the effort of a description. 1500 of your hard earned.
I wanted to build this with some parts I really craved when I was little. Should have bought it all a couple years back. It's bullshit now.
