  • I've got 16Gb RAM in my current machine, and tbf it does fine - but 32 is a larger number than 16, so it must be better.

  • Irrefutable.

  • Depends on use case. I have a maxxed out 2017. Never needed more than 16gb, but the 512 felt small when I was dual booting and gaming on it (with egpu).
Over the last few years my workflow uses more and more cloud based tools so I need less storage.

  • I ordered the 13" MBP yesterday!

    Kidding.

But I have just ordered this

13-inch MacBook Pro - Space Grey

    With the following configuration:

    • 2.3GHz quad-core 10th-generation Intel Core i7 processor, Turbo Boost up to 4.1GHz
    • 13-inch Retina display with True Tone
    • Touch Bar and Touch ID
    • Intel Iris Plus Graphics
    • 32GB 3733MHz LPDDR4X memory
    • 2TB SSD storage

I figured I've got a Dell XPS 13" with Windows, a Lenovo X1 13" with Linux and so may as well get a MBP 13" with MacOS just so I know what Google Chrome feels like on all of them.

  • You're clearly making too much money :)

Hope you're stashing some and retiring early.

  • It's a laptop, a work tool, a play tool... this laptop even highly spec'd has a lower cost than most watches in the watch thread (my contributions to that thread... casio G-shocks) and generates value from the work created on it and enjoyment from the games played, music created, films watched.

I've never regretted spending on computing, especially as I tend to go learn things and then apply those things.

If you can find an extra 50% now to get your laptop from "this is good" to "holy fuck this is great" then do it. It will ultimately add years to the life of it, and increase enjoyment and utility from the outset.

In the case of this one... pay attention to the specs. Specifically, they've put DDR3 memory in the lower CPU and memory models. This is slow memory, 5 years out of date... you really really want the higher CPU models and to get the DDR4 memory.

Most people probably haven't even noticed that.

But if anyone is going to buy the 13" MBP... bump the CPU and/or RAM until you get DDR4 RAM.

They've also left 8th gen processors in the lower spec ones.
Parts bin clear out for the lower spec ones, albeit with the newer keyboard.

Got a 2020 Macbook Air recently. Still well within the returns period. Time to look at the reviews and see if it's worth returning/exchanging.

These are excellent... if you chose the Air because that fits your work, stick with it. It's a fantastic machine.

For me, it's video and audio work that lend to the MBP. And this rules out my Linux machines (few drivers/software for the hardware I plug in), and I could use my Windows laptop but I chose that for long battery life and low power... so I'm filling a gap in the laptops I have by going for something high power and that supports the hardware I have. If I wasn't looking for this... I wouldn't have got another laptop, but if I were in the market for a laptop and didn't need that power it would be a a 2020 Macbook Air

  • I don't need the power, but its a combination of future proofing and willy waving I guess that draws me toward the MBP instead of the probably much more suitable for my needs Air.

That said, the Air is the same size and 100g lighter, so if we leave cash money to one side, there's not much point getting the Air instead of the Pro.

I'd likely get the one I posted the screenshot of, top CPU and RAM, but .5TB of storage as I don't think I need more.

Pretty much chose it because I don't know how to use a Mac.

First few days. Infuriating. Having to relearn muscle memory from years of zipping round Windows with shortcuts. It is pretty though.

  • Just joking. 100% agree with you re speccing up until your wallet cries, it's worth it in the long run.

(also remembering the days when you were counting the pennies working on making the lfgss platform a business, such a shame it didn't work out. It's nice to see you earning shitloads of monies when I know you can do just as good without should you want to)

Exactly the same situation here...MBA i5 1.1GHz/16MB/512GB arrived last Thursday, working out if it's worth an extra £290 to get the new MBP i5 2.0GHz/16MB/512GB for similar reasons @Dammit refers to!

Replacing a mid-2012 MBA, so either's going to be a marked improvement and both would (I'd hope) be something I end up with a similar lifespan for so thinking the cost will be spread over seven or eight years. Hmm, got a week and a bit to decide...

  • I'm thinking of buying a refurb 2012 iPad mini on eBay to use exclusively as a music player running Tidal. Is there any reason why it wouldn't be up to the task?

    Cheers

  • You should be fine hardware (as in performance) vise, but your might run into Tidal requiring a version iOS that your iPad won't support

  • Brilliant thank you. I’ll check that out 👍

  • I bought a 13" MacBook Pro for £2,248.8 which was delivered last week and I've been using it all week. A bit miffed that a new one came out literally a week later. What are the options on returning it after using it for a week? It's just been sat on a desk. The similar new model is now £1708.80 which is about £540 cheaper!

I got the 13-inch MacBook Pro - Space Grey with the following configuration:
    2.8GHz quad-core 8th‑generation Intel Core i7 processor, Turbo Boost up to 4.7GHz
    Intel Iris Plus Graphics 655
    16GB 2133MHz LPDDR3 memory
    512GB SSD storage
    Retina display with True Tone
    Four Thunderbolt 3 ports

  • Sign in to the store, initiate returns procedure. You've got 14 days from delivery to raise it, then 14 days from raising it to sort it out and send it off. UPS let you book a pick-up slot in the next five working days I think, or you can take it to a drop-off. Should be ok assuming you've got all the packaging.

  • You should be able to return it / exchange for a new one no problem.

  • As above, you'll be fine to return.
It'll be 30 days rather than 14 as it's covered by distance selling regs.

I returned a Macbook Air after 15 days as I found a higher spec model for cheaper (some lazy pricing by Amazon).

Opened a chat with Apple online. Said I found it cheaper.
Fair enough they said, UPS will arrive tomorrow to collect. Free. Done

  • Similar boat here, upgraded from 2013 MBA. My 2020 Air was delivered last month so I'm out of the return window for the last 2 or so weeks now. To get the same-level of upgradedness (16 gigs/1TB and i7) I would need to pay £350 more and not sure if it's worth it. I despise the touch-bar and my daily routine is around web and coding, so only upside for me would be the 2 extra USB ports (I dropped the -C now that I'm on the 2020 model)

So thanks Apple for keeping the return window a sane 14-days and not putting me in the position to decide between the new MBP and my new MBA :D

They're allowing returns to store for 14 days after they reopen. You'd almost certainly be able to put yourself in a quandary if you so needed...

  • She really likes the gold colour of her new air

Read this as she really likes the gold colour of her new hair and thought "yea, classy!"
    🙂

  • Seriously though I love the gold macs as well (such shiny, much prestige), and frankly a specced up 2020 Air might just be all I need, yet I fear I would be hearing it's fan all day every day, and I just can't handle that.
