  • Do you mean the Epic React?

  • I used to use a flipbelt but now as I have the 945 run without anything, it worked well but having an iPhone plus meant it was a bit of an awks fit.

    It feels like there is a gap between trail running preppers vs casual runners who want to carry things. The Freetrain vest gives some of this but it doesn't seem particularly well made/thought out and seems to be a dropshippers delight straight out of China.

  • Also before I buy one brand new - is anyone thinking of shifting a garmin forerunner 35?

  • Bag chat - I (used to) do my run commute with an OMM, had a 13" MBP and work clothes in there (in a plastic bag), and once you get used to a weight that will zag when you zig, it becomes less hateful.

  • So I had the originals and have run in the infinitys.

    I wouldn't recommend the epic reacts but would recommend the infinity's.
    They're both super comfy, the flyknit is really comfy (much prefer to the plastic Zoom material), the tongue being part of the shoe means the lace really well (Something I can't say about the Peg turbos!).
    The Epic reacts I felt just didn't have enough lateral support and were slippy. This seems to have been addressed with the infinity's. I saw that Jack Rayner has been running in the Infinitys on some of his longer training runs which probably bodes well for their suitability over those distances.

  • Struggling with patella tendonitis at the moment which has stopped any running since my birthday on 29th March. I stupidly wanted to ride 100 miles on Zwift to celebrate the big 3-0, ran a couple times afterwards and have well and truly exacerbated a case of PT in both legs.

    I've been doing very gentle, high cadence cycling since then but the issue still persists. Around a 3/4 out of 10 on the discomfort scale at the moment. Really itching to get back out running and riding properly again but hard to know how much to do/when. Another day off today. It sucks! Anyone on here with experience of this injury?

  • Anyone ever seen a leg hernia before? I’ve had one since I was at least 12 but have put 2 and 2 together and realised it’s probably the reason why my left foot feels “a bit odd” while running. Hard to describe but it feels like my left foot pronates/rolls differently. There’s a pair of soft lumps in the side of my leg and if you poke them, there’s a noticeable gap in the leg muscle. They don’t hurt and I can run decent distances at normal times but the left leg/foot definitely feels like it’s doing something different.

    In terms of shoes, I’ve run in minimal/barefoot, neutral padded (Pegasus 28? And am currently using react flyknit things). Doesn’t seem to make much difference but I’ve done well in neutral/minimal shoes previously.

  • I sorry to hear, its a very annoying issue. I get tendonitis in my achilles, it flairs up very occasionally, but when it does its horrible. My right tendon gets hot and much much bigger than my left, can take days to cool down but stays oversize for a surprising amount of time.

    Once it starts I can make it through a few extra weeks of hockey games by icing it immediately post game, raising it up and not doing anything on it for the rest of the week. but after 3 games of that and a few ibuprofen its untenable to keep going, in my experience anything less than 5/6 weeks complete rest means it flairs up again almost immediately.

    After the many weeks rest I build up slowly with lots of ankle dips on a stair, then long walks, medium easy cycles before, then short runs, then 5 a side, and finally back up to proper activity. its a fair few weeks work, but it does avoid another trip to the doctors.

  • Yes, this had me benched for best part of three months many years ago. As with all these things, I don't know whether it healed of its own accord or whether I helped it along by following physio advice, but FWIW the main exercise I did to strengthen the muscles around the tendon was squats, initially two legs then one-legged squats, but on an incline board which helps to isolate the quad which you're strengthening, whilst taking strain off the lower leg.

  • ...A word on cross-training through patellar tendonitis, I remember the annoying thing compared to other injuries I've had being that cycling was indeed problematic when the injury was at its worst, but I think I could use the elliptical trainer, which seemed to involved a more limited range of motion than actual running. Bloody boring though! :)

    ...edit... Not to mention difficult to access at present, if you haven't got a gym at home. :(

    Just got my favourite running shoes (Saucony Jazz 21 - RRP £110 or so) for £49.99 from SportsShoes.com

    Current pairs are at 593km (although stuck in locker at work) and 343km. They tend to be fine for 700-900km for me. The two pairs of Peregrine trail shoes are on 535km and 775km so I'll probably get a spare pair of those in a few weeks (the current pair they have with 40% off are a bit gaudy even for me).

    [EDIT] Up to an 8km run, should be back to 10km in two weeks' time.

  • MY physio has me doing bilateral bounces and then hops (and well as the two calf raises) which have been really helpful. I think it helps loosen it but I'm not sure.

  • Thinking of upgrading Apple Watch to 945. Worth it?

    Like heart rate and listening to podcasts when running.

  • My Fenix 3 refuses to die but I do like the idea of a watch that also does heart rate, so interested in the opinions of the 945 (or other shiny new device).

  • I have the 245 it's excellent. No touchscreen (bonus) excellent visibility in bright sun.

    Voice prompts for pace and best of all 500 songs from a streaming platform of your choice.

  • 945 is a near enough a plastic fenix 5

    Fenix 5 is good (6 offers nothing that the 5 doesnt do).

    Similar enough to the 3 to be familiar, but also comes in non-dinner plate sizes.

    I have the Plus, but only use the music player at the gym (which saves having a phone in the gym with me)

  • 945 does look great for features, does all the good stuffs - but cant get over the chunkyness. Polar Vantage V looks so much nicer - but sadly no music / mapping :(

  • I liked my Fenix 3, but sold it in the end as it took an age to GPS lock compared to my very old FR910xt, which I'm still using (and held together with gorilla glue and a bit of sellotape).
    Optical HR is naff. Don't bother.

  • I like the optical HR on my Felix 3 .. may not be accurate as chest strap but it’s consistent and gives a quick confirmation (or otherwise) to running by feel.. I would defo like to have music on there to avoid carrying anything else.

  • Wrist HR is funny, it's generally good, but occasionally does something daft and I happily accept those peccadilloes over having to wear a chest strap. I'll probably try and get hold of s chest strap at some point to make a better comparison though.

    Anyone got a garmin friendly HR chest strap for sale?
