Many 'murican companies do this, I'm just across their border and my shipping costs are still close to $600 USD. Rivendell, to add contrast, would charge me $125 USD.

I reached out to Crust a while back and the owner said that the recommended price for UK shipping on the website was inaccurate. Best to arrange your own courier or drop them an email. Iirc it was around $200 before import duties.

Cool, but for the price of a Crust, shipping, and import duties, could have a custom built ( all theoretical of course, just got too much time on my hands, dream bike building passes time).
-
• #23335
Even custom build nowadays in the UK is still a fair bit, like a frames build by a Belgian who doesn’t even files the braze cost way more.
-
• #23336
Understood, but this is just covid19 dream bike building, never gonna actually happen.
-
• #23337
Tbh, it’s one of those thing that a half decent frames and a custom fork bring it out brilliantly.
A Soma Wolverine is definitely a better alternative that we can get here in the UK despite the high price.

Its a Y.A.K.
Yeah, go figure. It's a very well tig welded Kiwi frame. NO idea on its history as I found it in a skip.
It still lives. About to throw some 650 and a low trail fork on it. See if it relaxes it a little more.@si_mon628 I'll try get some more pics of it, it's not being ridden much as I'm busy indoors getting fat.

A friend of mine wants a new bike with the following:
Flat bar / risers
1x
Bigger tyres (30+)He wants to be able commute and ride some gravel / dirt tracks / etc. nothing too extreme.
I suggested the geared Bombtrack Arise flat bar because it ticks all the boxes, plus it’s steel, has a front rack, rack and mudguard mounts and is easily purchased where we live (South Australia).
Any other suggestions?

Ha! You are not the only one idly popping crust frames into the basket and seeing what it would cost.
FWIW I found that if I put my actual address (rather than just UK) into the shipping calculator a third option for shipping popped up which as about $200. Still not cheap, plus import etc makes them extremely uncompetitive.
I am now trying to convince myself that I can make a surly pack rat about half as cool as a canti lightning bolt.

no genesis smithfield ?

8 speed though. I can send it to him... and it is $800 cheaper. Kinda ugly though and looks like a mid-2000’s hybrid.

• #23347
As far as I can tell, Genesis aren’t easily available in Australia.

Which is great, as the Sirrus X look more like a Diverge with flat bar;
They come in 8, 9, 1o and 11 speed tho? 8 speed isn't a problem, as the wear and tear will be a lots less and 11-40t cassette are cheap as chip.

These are really nice, not as insta friendly as steel but ride really well.

Yeah, only playing about on the internet, would never consider buying a Crust, unless they set up a UK distributor......then maybe.
Stanforth Skyelander available with mid or low trail fork, 631 or 853, ahead or quill,700c or 650b, closest I've found in UK to the Crust canti lightning bolt. Just lockdown time wasting though, very happy with my current bicycle.
Crust should get a UK distributor, just as a lockdown exercise, I put a canti lightning bolt in the basket to find out shipping costs, £900+ for shipping alone. Shan't be having one of them.
