  • If you start adding stuff, weld a cantilever cable hanger on that frame ;)

  • This is fantastic, where did you get the super high hard on stem?

  • I think SJS, it's a Humpert/Ergotec High Charisma. Velo Orange have got their "Grand Cru Cigne" limp-dick copy out now though, I'd get that rather if you value aesthetics

  • Dull morning bike check.

Irritatingly, bar tape is ruined and nice gouges taken out of the shifter and brake lever due to black ice on an ungritted roundabout at the university (because the Estates team somehow thought the carpark was more important than the main cycling route through campus, the useless fucks).

Cambium is gone and in its place is an AliExpress SMP special. It's pretty good, I think an improvement on the C17. Need more long rides to be sure. I wish I got on with normal, attractive saddles. Creaks a bit sometimes, so I may go full Hogg and get a Composit or Forma.

The old SPD touring pedals, having rolled under my feet numerous times due to the stack and short front-rear measurement, nearly did in for me completely. Cycling along no hands at a decent clip, the left flipped and I stacked, hard. Probably came close to breaking my elbow, and agonising road rash. So, long overdue, they've returned to the parts bin.

The Nukeproof pedals are very good, but a bit overkill (will eventually move across to my mtb full time) and I'd like to retain the SPD option. Anyone have any recommendations? PD-A530 look a better shape.

Rear mech needs new jockey wheels. Or updating completely. Hmm.

Am also tempted to go the Stedloop bars route, but I do like drops, and I'd have to fork out for some thumbie mounts. Ugh.

  • y u taunt me like this

  • I have these mudguards and they are bonkers good, maybe even worth the extortionate price I paid

  • Pretty sure I spotted this bike + rider (and friend/partner) in Edinburgh on Wednesday on the Royal Mile. It was raining and I was walking so I passed up on the opportunity to point and shout.

    Gumwalls looked a little dirty...

  • Is that 'SMP' the Gub one?

  • Different brand (and metal rails), but yes, that shape

  • Ah - I've been keeping an eye out for metal rails, what brand is yours?

  • Promend, I think. I'm more inclined towards carbon rails, but I don't think the gub one was around at the time.

I'm unlikely to use this one again anytime soon - I have a Brooks on there now - if you want to purchase it off me

  • Ooh maybe. PM'd - cheers.

  • @TomvanHalen do you still have that Paul chainkeeper? If you do, would you part with it?

  • I think so... I may have sold it. I will check the parts bin ASAP

  • Fair enough. Let me know if you find it/what you would want for it. I guess it would be for a 28.6mm, that's what your Raleigh looks like.

  • Ah, looking back I think it's 31.8. Steel is real (thick).

  • All of the thickness! Well no rush but let me know if you find it/what size it is etc

  • Have been riding this a lot, and tbh, I'm just not quite comfortable enough with the top tube length and general fit/geo, because am kind of t-rexy. The beginnings of a new project are rumbling, and the Raleigh 853 Enduro-Allr(o)ad HHSTourer (sick flames) is going to have to find a new home.

Will be putting up an advert for most likely the frameset w/ seatposts, and splitting some of the XTR swag, but open to offers to a full build of sorts (will be keeping the cranks and saddle, at the least).

  • Hi, Have enjoyed your build story - very interesting how hard it is to get the frame to work right..have just got this bike - RSP Pro-line M-Trax from http://www.retrobike.co.uk/forum/viewtopic.php?f=21&t=289102 - and am enjoying trying to crack the old school mtb geometry - the guy who built it had some great ideas for drive train - but the bars didn't work for me - made it too long ....my current plan involves BMX riser bars and short bmx stem - the allow old school bar limitless variation seems to be working - am hoping my new rockshox will work a treat - currently looks like a raleigh grifter! thanks for your posts they are full of ideas for this quirky frame best w r

  • Ah cool! Nice that yours has the headbadge, I never found one for sale. The frame is built back up under the fine steerage of @DisappointingBob, hope to get some good pics soon.

  • I missed this at the time! Definitely Kate and me, we had just got to Edinburgh on Monday after touring the west coast. Good stuff :3

    Cleaning real gumwalls sucks

  • Recently reborn. Been in my possession for a while, finally left the city limits. Thanks Tom. First attempt at photo, fingers crossed.
