Next up was the fork, I wasn't sure how well the masking vinyl would work so I thought I'd trial it on the fork before moving on to the frame

So this is where it's sitting at present.
Looks better in photos than it does in the flesh bit I'm happy with it for a first go

I'm now undecided about the clear coat. I have the silver sparkle stuff but I like it with a matte finish. I've ordered the flat clear but impatient me is thinking of using the sparkle as it's sitting here ready to go.
Also, the stem paint is flaking, it probably needed a primer so now I'm on the look out for a nice stem...open to suggestions (80mm for my stubby little arms)

There is a decent cheap stem on the decathlon site that has the same flat top as your top tube. I reckon it would go well.

All in all I've found the spray.bike stuff really easy and fun to use.
I could have got a better finish if is taken more time with prep and building up the paint a bit lighter but with the messy overspray/splats of paint look I was going for I don't think it matters too much.
With this paint job I'm pretty sure I won't have to wash the muck off it too often as it already looks like it's covered in mud?
I'm really looking forward to building it back up -

Cheers, I'll have a look over there now

That's really kind cheers, I've just ordered an 80mm online.
I'm in Swansea so wouldn't be able to make a collection.
Thanks -

Cool, no worries! Looking forward to seeing this built.

If you want a matte finish just go over it with a wet sponge fifteen minutes after the last coat and itโll knock the gloss right off.

Top tip, thanks.
I'm not sure if the sparkle would be too much, but also I could do that today instead of waiting until next weekend -
• #17
Wait for the matte ๐๐ป
-
• #18
I think the sparkle isn't needed. Looks great as is and you cant go back after you use the sparkle!
-
• #19
Yeah, probably should have waited for the matte, but I'm an impatient div so I went glitter.
It looks ok but it would have been better if I hadn't. Too bad, I've done it now.
Loosely built up for now

Looks good. Plus, dirt will never show on it.

This is excellent, the fact that I would be bricking myself attempting the same thing adds to the sense of accomplishment on your part. You are right, the paint neatly camouflages any dirt accumulated during riding. The forks are particularly nice.
I'm trying to play the 'where in Swansea is he' game based on the photos, but I'm failing. Put me out of my misery! Uplands?

I like the shine to be honest. Especially on the seat tube and black areas. I reckon when your new stem arrives keep it black.

Also some black rims with the splatters would be pretty nice.

Tycoch, not far off
I've been considering having a go of the spray.bike for a while. The BB on the Boardman died recently so I decided it was time to give it a strip down and a paint.
There has been much stressing and deliberation but I'm pretty happy with how it looks so far.
Weather wasn't great so I put together a pro spray booth in the garden just to get used to the paint on a few small bits.
