• Surly hubs are an answer

Single freewheels are either limited in gear options or White Industries expensive. If you want a couple of different gears, two WI freewheels and any hub comes to more than a Hope trials hub and a couple of nice HG-splined sprockets.

A Surly New disc hub and any one half decent freewheel comes to more than twice the price of the Novatec SS cassette hub and a decent sprocket.

I don't know what question "Surly" is the answer to, but I'm pretty sure it's not @Coffeeholic 's question.

  • Thanks to everyone for the replies.

Yes surley hub and shimano freewheel is out of my price range.
I could do a cheap version of both but I am not 100% convinced I like this solution.

The Novatec SS Hub is definitely my favourite but I have listened to some sound samples on youtube and the noise is hideous. I will look at options to reduce the noise and might give that hub a go.

Anyhow I think I should open a new thread for this as it has become less wheel building related.

  • I suppose I might be a hub snob.
