The XR31T is much better than the Archetype rim. XR31T all the way.

I mean did you run these hubs road or offroad?
Novatec was on my SS MTB, Hope on my gravel bike (before they started to call them GravelBikes🙂). Actually, I'm pretty sure the rear hub on my snow wheels is just a rebranded Novatec too.

Awesome thanks! One thing is that I don’t have an XL, do you think that would cause a major difference?
-
• #9255
Nah the rhyno lites would have been for a personal build.
I’m looking at Kinlin’s cargo bike rims for the bikes at work. They all have rohloffs- as I can request drilling specifics I may as well try and make them as compatible with those hubs as possible.

Why not a screw on freewheel and a surly hub?
-
• #9257
Or one of these https://www.tartybikes.co.uk/135mm_fixed_hubs/c21.html and a freewheel from the same site, or shimano/Sturmey/dicta if you value quietness and price over engagement points.

If the snap is not related to external damage then you ha e a case of fatigue. When one goes other spokes will follow. Yes factory wheels can be expensive to own. Think of them as secondchand ferrari, they seem like a bargin then you get the garage bill.

If you use a spaim.hm washer then then nipples can pivot nicely.

Surly hubs are the answer.

Surly hubs are an answer
ftfy
Single freewheels are either limited in gear options or White Industries expensive. If you want a couple of different gears, two WI freewheels and any hub comes to more than a Hope trials hub and a couple of nice HG-splined sprockets.
A Surly New disc hub and any one half decent freewheel comes to more than twice the price of the Novatec SS cassette hub and a decent sprocket.
I don't know what question "Surly" is the answer to, but I'm pretty sure it's not @Coffeeholic 's question.

Thanks to everyone for the replies.
Yes surley hub and shimano freewheel is out of my price range.
I could do a cheap version of both but I am not 100% convinced I like this solution. The Novatec SS Hub is definitely my favourite but I have listened to some sound samples on youtube and the noise is hideous. I will look at options to reduce the noise and might give that hub a go.
Anyhow I think I should open a new thread for this as it has become less wheel building related.

What were the tubers trying to prove? It seems to be a point of pride in some circles to have a really loud ratchet, so they would have mixed the audio to give the impression that a cheap Novatec is just as loud as an expensive Hope or King.
If you want stealth, ride fixed with a galvanised chain🙂
-
• #9264
In my experience you can also reduce the noise by using lots of grease on the panels on the freehub

Wouldn't mess with thick grease and pawls if that's what you're suggesting

Good point well made. If you slow them down with excessive or viscous lube, there's a chance that they won't have time to get in place to engage when you apply drive torque. Hub manufacturers who have very little else to say can be very prescriptive about ratchet lubrication, for good reason.

Very popular with bmx riders. Also degreasing to get louder pawls
-
• #9268
I am. Not thick grease though, and not excessive amounts, because like tester says, you can clog them so they don’t engage.
-
• #9269
Yes grease could help, I assume only temporary until its spread elsewhere.
In theory it is spring tension and the manufacturers probably use excessive tension springs to make it louder..BTW I have opened a new thread concerning SSDH.

Another bmxer thing, bending those springs so the pawls are tight as fk.

I suppose I might be a hub snob.

whats the forum approved wheel building stand? Preferably one I can order from the UK and <£100

This is basically a clone of the old Minoura I use
This is the updated/upgraded version, but doesn't free stand so you need to clamp/bolt to a bench/table
I doubt that's there much difference between any of the cheap stands, you're not going to get nice axle clamps and dial gauges for £100

Thanks Tester. Purchased the Minoura clone :)
Wow, for which application if you dont mind me asking? I mean did you run these hubs road or offroad?
Many thanks for the suggestion XR31 looks good. Was looking at archetype and this seems to be similar if not better.
