I was sad they missed off my personal set-up, especially given it's easy and comparitively cheap: 10 speed SRAM both ends.
For ages I was running a compact double with 11-36 cassette, which has a pretty decent 484% range. Admittedly, the low gear is not that low, so for off-road with luggage is still a bit much. All the same, I switched the 34 ring for a 36 (as I prefer a smaller gap up front) and 1:1 bottom gear has been fine for technical singletrack climbs unloaded.
If I fitted one of those 46/30 FSA chainsets, I'd get a 500% range with a 22.6 bottom gear which should more than have qualified my mullet. Hmph.
I've got exactly that at the moment. 46/30 and 11-36, and a 42t single ring, with a 2×10 GX. Works well.
The only problem is you can't get hydro disks on SRAM 10 unless you use something like TRP Hylex I guess. I am massive cable disk fanboy but for some reason I've decided to switch to 11 speed
I just built a new bike and was torn between getting a complete as a value-for-money way of upping to 11 speed and full hydraulics, but stuck with 10 speed and bought flatmount HyRds. V v impressed with them tbh, having come from using JuinTech R1s
