• Raleigh Single Speed Bike - Restored - from 1974 (*possibly 1984)

Hey, I have a Raleigh bike converted to Single Speed for sale. It's a frame size 56, with a white and blue paint job and a glossy finish.
What got my attention in the first place was the nice shape of the frame and that it had many parts stamped with Made in Japan (Sakae). These include the handlebars, stem, seat post, cranks and Specialised pedals.
Bike weights 9.7kg with everything on, as seen in the pictures.
I've completely stripped down the bike, sanded the frame down to the bare metal, primed/painted and varnished, cleaned all the parts and replaced the square tapered BB as well as all the bearings (headset and BB). Custom paint design.

    Specs:
    Dia-Compe - Brake calipers
Square tapered BB + Bearings - New
    Headset Bearings - New
    Brake levers (Tekro) - New
    Cables + Saddle - New
    Bottle cage - New
Various screws and other bits (metal cable guides, seatpost lock screw, etc)
    Deda handlebar tape
    GIPIEMME dropouts

It has a pretty aggressive geometry - stem/handlebars will probably need to be raised and adjusted.

    52T Chainring with a 16T Freewheel (flip-flop to fixie)
    38cm Handlebars
    170mm Cranks

Comes with 23c Gatorskin tires on standard 700c wheels. The brake surface is in very good condition.

I have loads of photos taken before/during the refurb process. Will add more in the comments.

    Serial No: WF4004374
Based on the serial - this was made in April 1974 (or '84) in one of the oldest factories in Worksop (Carlton Cycles). I can't pinpoint the exact model due to some alterations made to the frame by a previous owner - the metal cable housing stops and the rear derailleur hanger were cut off, I'm guessing by someone who wanted to convert it to a fixie.

The bike runs very nice as it has new bearings, BB and it's greased.
To be honest, the only thing I would change would be a new set of brake pads as I don't like the ones from Jagwire.
I have leftover paint and varnish that will come with the bike, so it's easy to do any touch-ups if anything happens.
I have a small set of bike lights (front and back) that I'm happy to include if you need them.

Feel free to ask any more questions.

  • Looks great! Out of interest what is it about the pads you don’t like?
    Stefan

  • Thanks! I think it's because I'm not used to them and the difference is more obvious when I compare it to the bike I use daily. They're just the basic jagwire brake pads and don't have the same stopping power as the clarks cartridges I have on my other bike.

The bike had no brakes and it had a freewheel... So when I went to pick it up, I had to push it all the way home!
I was thinking to put some more modern tekro or shimano calipers when building it up but I came across a listing with the Dia-Compe ones and thought it matched the frame better.

  • There is a stick in the front brake ? 2nd to last pic.

  • Well spotted! It kept the bike from rolling, my street is at a slight angle. First thing I could find was the tiny stick!

  • Like it.:-) I thought it was to stop someone from riding off with your Raleigh.

  • :)) they can't ride off without paying for it!!
