  • I've had a 5, 8, 9, 10 and 12. The 8 was by far the the stiffest and felt fucking rapid but 10/12 are way more comfy. The 10 and 12 are pretty similar although the 12 does have a lot of nice features over the 10. Also the 10 is 25c max but you can get a 30/32 in a 12 with the right combo (i even fit a 33). I wouldn't build up a 12 with mechanical though, the cable routing is shockingly bad.

    Tbh i would just save up/get a cycle scheme voucher for a disc 13 - it's the best one

  • Thanks that's useful. I went touring on a USA 8 so at least I know I don't need to be concerned over comfort on the later models. I agree the 13 disc makes the most sense if I want the feel of a new bike I'm just not sure I get on board with the dull looking package and trickier maintenance. At my level of riding I'm not unconvinced that with a better choice of contact points the 9 is more than good enough for me. There seem to be fewer inspiring builds on the 9 platform but this from @Harry might sway me.
