  • I'm quite dubious about giving my data to the Vote Leave campaign.

And depending on how the app is meant to be used, I'm quite nervous about a bunch of hyped-up cops running around demanding to see everyone's app status.

  • thousands of new infections a day?

Number of infections is definitely way down though. This graph is a very good representation I thought.

  • On tracing apps, you can do them right enough:

    https://www.theregister.co.uk/2020/04/27/covidsafe_australia_contact_tracing_app/

But yes, they need to be careful where they put our data and be open/honest about it, so somebody needs to keep Cummings very very far away from speccing it :)

  • There is a little information about the in-development NHS app at https://www.nhsx.nhs.uk/blogs/digital-contact-tracing-protecting-nhs-and-saving-lives/

  • having not heard Boris speak for a while, i'd forgotten what a massive empty cunt he is

  • That speech this morning is just pure gaslighting.

"People are looking at us and wondering how we've done it"

What, attained the highest death stats in Europe without even having an overwhelmed health system? Should be filed next to shoplifting stats going down. Abject tosser.

  • Not exactly trying to defend anything here, but the UK doesn't have the highest death stat quite yet, right? Neither in absolute nor in relative terms - though we're on a very 'good' trajectory to getting there... your point stands of course, what 'success' are they talking about??

  • Depends on if you believe the official stats or the figures the Financial Times put out which are 43k+.

I'd be more inclined to go with the FT estimates personally.

  • Do you have a link to that? I think their 'tracker' still just has the official figures, no? Also, I think the same issues with the official reporting also apply to a lot of other countries, so it's hard to compare any 'real' figures still.

  • They have started looking at excess deaths, detailed here https://www.ft.com/content/6bd88b7d-3386-4543-b2e9-0d5c6fac846c UK not the worst in under-reporting

  • indeed.

  • I saw that page too, but the numbers left me mostly confused. For example, they say "In all the countries analysed except Denmark, excess deaths far outnumbered the official coronavirus death tolls" - but then looking at the UK, they show 15.6k excess deaths for England and Wales (compared to historic averages), while officially reported Coronavirus deaths for England and Wales are at 19.2k according to this. I'm probably missing something here - I don't quite get it.

  • Ah thanks, that article actually solves my confusion above - though the chart in the other article says 'updated April 26th', the actual numbers in there are apparently for April 10th and so the actual 'excess death' numbers will be much higher now:

But because of the lag in collating the data, the ONS published figures for the period to April 10 are significantly out of date as they are based on registrations received by the statistical office, which on average arrive four days after the actual date of death.

The FT’s analysis has extrapolated these figures using the latest trends in the daily hospital deaths assuming the relationship between these and total excess deaths remained stable, as it has so far over the course of the pandemic.

Using this calculation, a conservative estimate of UK excess deaths by April 21 was 41,102.

  • Isn't 15.6k the total weekly deaths, up 37% from a recent average of 9.5k?

The inference being that corona virus is killing - directly or indirectly - about 6,000 people per week.

  • Ah - I see. It appears to be.

The inference being that corona virus is killing - directly or indirectly - about 6,000 people per week.

Might even be more, depending on whether deaths from other causes are actually down. On the one hand there's less activity of all kinds (so fewer accidents etc. expected), on the other hand people are more hesitant to go see a doctor (so possibly a higher death rate from equal rates of illness, accidents etc.).

  • But yes, they need to be careful where they put our data and be open/honest about it, so somebody needs to keep Cummings very very far away from speccing it :)

    In Britain?

  • Heh, I don't think his reach goes as far as Australia :D

Just wouldn't fancy him finding a way to get the access to the real names etc. very open for the UK data.

I'm fine with an app that uses hashes to identify us with proper data lockdown and being able to access/delete your records once this epidemic is under control. But, I have to see first what we get here.

Is this good news or bad? How good is our NHS digital team vs the two biggest tech giants

cant help but worry the tracing app is going to fail and the NHS will get savaged by the media

  • Our company are considering three days at home, two days in the office post lockdown for all staff, the saving on office space will be significant.

And we won’t be putting people back into our city of London office when the lockdown is eased even if we can, it makes no sense exposing employees to commuter trains and tubes if there’s no need to.

  • Lockdown in New Orleans.

I’d be happy to see this in our local ASDA

  • Went to shops earlier and was losing my shit at manky coughing bastards loping about without a fuck given.

The fact that people queue two meters apart then engage in scrums for a pint of milk just depresses the shit out of me. And that's before we get to the fucking wanks wearing disposable gloves that are practically giving themselves face massages every couple of minutes.

I don't know what they need to reign it in but they're obviously not getting it atm...

  • My company did our first deliveries for Feed the NHS today.

    We are based in Whitechapel.

Today we sent food to Queen Mary's in Roehampton, and later in the week we hope to also send food to Barts.

We could possibly ramp up production a fair bit more, but need some volunteer Chef's. So, if there are any Chef's out there who could maybe do 1 day a week, please contact me through PM.

    Ta.

  • When you say chef do you mean legit chef? Far from a chef, but happy to do prep/cleaning.

  • the NHS will get savaged by the media

I'd be surprised. Given the (justified) public outpouring of appreciation for the NHS, I can't see anyone but the usual contrarian columnists daring to be critical. I think most of the criticism will be aimed directly at this current government and their ham-fisted handling of the crisis.
