Here's a question that I am sure the veterans of this thread will shake their heads at, but it's something I can't work out.
When running at as fast a pace as I can hold (literally on the ragged edge of what I can do whilst breathing to support it) I find that saliva builds up, which when I swallow to clear it interrupts my breathing rhythm and means I need to momentarily recover (if that makes sense).
This is 175-178 bpm, which for an old duffer like me is perilously close to my ultimate limit, and it the level of effort that (when I was fitter) got a 20 minute 5k time at Parkrun.
