I've had a 5, 8, 9, 10 and 12. The 8 was by far the the stiffest and felt fucking rapid but 10/12 are way more comfy. The 10 and 12 are pretty similar although the 12 does have a lot of nice features over the 10. Also the 10 is 25c max but you can get a 30/32 in a 12 with the right combo (i even fit a 33). I wouldn't build up a 12 with mechanical though, the cable routing is shockingly bad.
Tbh i would just save up/get a cycle scheme voucher for a disc 13 - it's the best one

Thanks that's useful. I went touring on a USA 8 so at least I know I don't need to be concerned over comfort on the later models. I agree the 13 disc makes the most sense if I want the feel of a new bike I'm just not sure I get on board with the dull looking package and trickier maintenance. At my level of riding I'm not unconvinced that with a better choice of contact points the 9 is more than good enough for me. There seem to be fewer inspiring builds on the 9 platform but this from @Harry might sway me.
Be keen to know what a step up the 10 is from the 9. Both have the same stack and reach and AFAIK the 10 uses 27.2 so I could use my mega setback post. Prices have also come Down to a point where a swap could be done on a tight budget.
Looking in to the 12 I've noted a few reviewers saying it's better then the 10 but not significantly. The geo is also different (not necessarily a bad thing) and it uses a 25.4 post which limits options. I've also noticed a lot of people selling there's...
TLDR, the 10 seems like a good economic upgrade, the 12 feels like potentially pointless middle ground. If I want (not need, want) a better bike I should save for carbon disc but I don't think C'dale offers anything I like.
