You say that but when you drop one in the pool/sea/lake on day one of your holiday the waterproofness is worth its weight in gold! Which in no way has happened to me. Twice.

Hahaha I know what you mean it’s a great feature. But not 100% necessary for me.
Not that I want a kindle fire. But they are hella cheap

I think the Paperwhite has a higher resolution screen than the standard Kindle, too, which might not be a bad idea if you're going to be staring at text on it for hours.
I swapped my (very old) Kindle for a Paperwhite before the new 'standard' one came out and was/am happy with it. I'd probably still get a Paperwhite if buying again just for the slightly nicer screen, but the standard one is a great deal.

I have an old paperwhite and an old standard kindle and the paperwhite is noticeably better in terms of both the resolution and the light. I'm not sure how that compares to current models but you could tell the difference.

The Oasis is a waste of money...

And the fire?

Shite tablet.
I have one, used to watch films on it in my way to work.
Battery life in meh, poor visibility in Sunlight, not pleasant to hold or read on in general. -

I recently bought a paperwhite after my old kindle touch died. As above I was torn between the new standard kindle (with light) and paperwhite. Personally I don’t notice the improvement in resolution, the light is an ENORMOUS improvement but now the standard kindle has that too. Waterproof is nice but I’ve not needed it.
The one thing that tipped my decision is an accessibility feature on the paper white that doesn’t exist on the standard. That is that the paperwhite allows white text on black background. I use this all the time and would hate to be without it now..

Just won - a Fire on eBay £7.00

Weird that white text isn’t available on the other models, that’s what I use to read books on my phone all the time.

It's worth £7!
I basically play Fallout Shelter or read comic on itMine was a gift but I'd happily pay a tenner to replace it.
Worth noting it's not an ereader though, yes you can read books on it, but the regular kindle USP is that it's easy in the eyes (as much as a book it)

I just thought I’d give it a try if I like it even slightly I’ll treat myself on prime day to a paperwhite

The kindle fire arrived today. It’s my first e-reader/tablet so my expectations aren’t high. The resolution seems good enough, I like the white ink on black background. It is reasonably heavy but I haven’t been to the gym for a while so maybe I need this. If I like it I’ll stick with it. If the weight and possibly the battery annoy me I’ll go for the basic kindle or paperwhite come prime day

I wouldn't really view the Fire as an e-reader. Using a proper e-reader like a paperwhite is very different in terms of weight and eye fatigue (plus obviously the battery).

If you like to read, get a paperwhite.

I will in the end. This was cheap so thought I’d give it a try.
I’m trying to download eboox but get stuck each time on google play
-
• #1268
I think you've got a great deal there, so not bashing it!
-
• #1269
If I figure how to work the thing!
I’m trying to download an app called eboox. I managed to download it yesterday. I even managed to start reading a book and then it told me the version was out of date.
I tried to download a newer version. All I get is this page

Aren't Fire tablets not very good friends with Google Play? Don't you have to use Amazon's app store?
-
• #1271
They are total total crap. Seriously, use it as a paperweight
-
• #1272
Yep.
I managed 2 years ago to make it work with trainer road.
Turned it on a couple of months ago. So slooooooooow -

You probably need to do something like this

I am going to root my two and install an AOSP Nexus android ROM on them.
This process involves removing the cover, removing a metal shield from the mother board and shorting out a pin on the clock to ground.
It may well go wrong and brick them.
Then they can carry on their lives as paperweights.
They cost me £20 each on a Black Friday sale.
I feel ripped off.
So so so so so so shit.

Do you want a 3rs to practice on?
That’s what I’m thinking. It’s half the price and I have a shower
