  • My new-stoker advice is ‘just keep pedalling’ and ‘don’t lean’. Tandems are much more stable when underway so you can adjust this advice once you make it that far.
We had a 0mph tumble outside the caff at the bottom of the galibier as we were cold and tired and temporarily forgot this wisdom.

  • Good advice, thanks. First attempt was terrible, second one was close bit we didn't try a third.

I will give it a go with my girlfriend who rarely rides and see if she does any better.

Worst case, I can get some kid cranks and get a 7 or 5 year old onboard

  • gearing might be a bit high for two beginners, any tips?

Starting is what separates experienced crews from beginners, a big gear seems like it would be an issue but actually a good solid push from two people gets up speed so quickly that changing gear is probably just as bad.

  • new-stoker advice is ‘just keep pedalling’ and ‘don’t lean’

Also don't steer. Ab initio training often has the stoker holding the captain's waist to prevent steering inputs from the back , followed by holding the centre of the bars next to the stem.

  • That makes sense. Thanks.

I will try the hands at the centre, keep pedalling and don't lean approach.

It can't be that hard, it is just like riding a bike after all

Real nice Bob Jackson tandem I am selling for anyone interested.

  • Stoker stem grip is good advice, discovered this by accident.
From motorbiking feel like I'm a good rider with a pillion /passenger on, but i myself am a terrible passenger /pillion, tend to over think and then react to every tiny movement from the pilot which then caused issues, also physically cannot sit still for ten seconds, ever!
Need to get some tanoming done this summer, have to taje bike outsude off city though, a million potholes/lights and neither of us are very experienced

  • I saw two tandems on Lea Bridge Road in Leyton today, within five minutes of each other.

    Lovely day for it!

I saw a kiddyback on in Leytonstone last week.

I think they're the only locals ones I have seen in 10 years of living here

  • We've had ours out two weekends in a row now. Ideal weather and quiet sunday mornings make for perfect tandeming.

  • Be sure to maintain approved social-distancing if riding with non-cohabitees

  • Mine has been taken out of the turbo trainer so I can get the kids using it, and is now out in the lean to.

My stokers are either from other households, or my girlfriend, so we can't leave the kids alone to go out together.

It's a big shame because the weather is so nice and the roads so quiet

  • Ours is back in the garage now, I don’t think Mrs Ludd fancies heading out on the roads on this. At least not with this seating arrangement.

  • Hey all.

Anybody want to buy this minus the wheelset and gear gubbins for £1000?
It has normal hangers for front/rear mechs and canti brake mounts (but building another disc wheelset would be best as the brakes are great). Pedals are DMR V12, only diff in picture is two orginal saddles were swapped out for Selle Italia X2s. Link to Circe website.

Avid BB7 calipers, Deore levers, SKS mudguards.

Standard models start from £1800. You can buy conversion kits for a young stoker and turning it into a rear-loading cargo bike.

Bought new and has always lived indoors.

I loved this bike but don't think I can take it to Australia now.

  • That frame isn't separable is it

  • Nope just a standard.

God that would be one expensive bike.

  • God that would be one expensive bike.

But so versatile. I think the separable frame is the really killer part of the Circe bikes, otherwise they seem a little limited. Seems you can have it retrofitted for £700.

  • Limited how so?

Compared to the other tandem I owned and the few I've ridden the Helios was way more fun and easier to maneuver. Supports a much bigger range of rider sizes too and has a low standover height.

Like without too much hassle I have piloted my wife, wife with a baby pouch, an 11-14 year old stoker, my wife piloted her mother. I think that is amazing for one tandem.

  • I remember rider weight being limited when we tried our friends'. (I'm a pie.) However, they have the separable one so that may be the cause. They did have to put a lot of thought into getting a gear range they were happy with. The other people we know with one have been tied into the Capreo stuff which really is limiting with the parts availability.

There's probably also a dollop of 'but they don't look right' that I'm willing to overlook when you have the convenience of packing down small.

  • Think the model I have is a different kettle of fish.

  • Worst few days of our lives, but it’s sunny and the little human needs normality.

Stole the wife’s tandem for some animal hunting, found cows, sheep, goats, ducks, rabbits and plenty of dogs and birds!

Do want to splash out on a third Nice rack and Wald basket, an onone goose stem and new bars.

Also need to rearrange the kiddo seat as she’s probably about at the size limit!

  • Anyone got any leads on a tandem that I could rent/borrow on Sunday, for about 6 hours?

(In case anyone is worried, please be assured I take very good care of bikes/gear that I use.)
