  • Title refers to a local colloquialism used to refer to these kinds of cheap and heavy (but reliable) dutch bikes. Got this particular "Stålhästen" branded hi-ten bike from the local classifieds with the intention of turning it into a slow any-weather commuter.

The bike is pretty low-end all around, with a crappy looking paint job and what looks like a slight bent fork and unreamed steerer tube (?), making stem adjustment quite difficult. I modified it slightly to better reflect my immediate needs, including taking off the chain guard, as it ended up being a nuisance.

Apart from small issues here and there, it seems like a solid coaster-brake beater.

  • Egg-mangle also features in Dr Xargle's Book of Earthlets, which was kind of a precursor to the Strange Planet comics.

What was the matter with the chain guard by the way? I've totally accepted my middle age now and fitted one to my daily bike as I find ti hugely convenient.

  • Greeting from the late 19th century! - decided to ditch the front basket for this functional wald double basket rack thing, still need to work on getting it level. few other bits changed as well

    fun corona project

  • I think the chainguard thing is mainly because I am so used to having direct access to the chain? I agree it is useful and will probably go back once the weather gets bad again
