• We've got this lovely old lilac tree in our front garden we moved in about 18 months ago and there was only the old growth on it so it's had 2 flowerings as is, do I need to pollard (I think that's the correct term - cut off the new growth) it anytime soon?

  • Wait until it’s done flowering so you get to enjoy it first. Then knock it back whichever way you see fit. You’ll struggle to kill it by pollarding so just prune it into whatever shape will be most convenient in future. If you’ve got existing pruning points to work to then even better.

    Lovely colour on that one.

  • yeah I agree with him up there. Wait until it finishes flowering and then you can prune. Personally i would remove that thick branch at bottom right. Prune it back as far as possible with a saw without removing too much of the shape/other branches.

They are very hardy and as that is obviously well established new shoots will grow quickly and flower again next year.

Nice colour I agree, mine is a lot paler colour
