Thanks, don't really want to go the epoxy route, I think it will be even uglier (though safer) than it currently is.
Thanks also to @Dammit and @Greenbank - I have some old jeweler's files, these might work, and replacement is not not an option as she actually has another but apparently the handle has a slightly different shape that is not as comfortable...
I can't really tell from the photo but the clay particles are likely to be relatively coarse and might break away as you try to sand it down. Also, as the damage is at the rim you'll risk making it even sharper.
Maybe using something like epoxy resin to fill the damage could work?
