  • On the tool chat, thanks to everyone who validated the impulse to by an impact driver.
    https://www.lfgss.com/comments/15000898/

Having a drill and a separate screw driver without having to change bits made my planters so much faster. Plus I've used it for a few bits on my Triumph as well as unbolting some rusty gazibo(sp?) bolts.

From a DIY POV no complaints of DeWalt, and the original drill was bought as a house warming present by a builder mate, if that's any extra endorsement.

EDIT: price now a lot more than I bought it for, so not that useful for ref.

  • Where did you source these?

  • If anyone needs any timber I have two 3m lengths of C24 grade 2x4 and various offcuts. Happy for anyone to come and collect for a beer.

  • Tempered glass might be a more suitable material as Plexiglas will scratch from being pushed on, over time this will gently fog it.

  • I have an old shower door (the type that sits on the edge of the bath and hinges out) down the side of my shed that your welcome to. Pretty sure that's tempered. Was going to smash it up and take it to the recycling centre but stopped when a couple of whacks with a 5lb lump hammer didn't break it and I didn't want to deafen the neighbours with any harder/louder blows.

  • Broughtons, they've got tons of options, the wood mount comes unfinished so you can paint it however you like.

  • The keyless chuck on my dewalt drill driver has frozen. Annoyingly it happened just within the warrant but my dad, who gave it to me as a birthday gift, couldn’t find the receipt fir a couple of months and it’s not covered by the warranty. Anyone had this problem and been able to fix it?

  • That's wild, a reproduction? From what, 1920s?

  • Frozen fully in or fully out?
    Got any pictures?

  • thank you for the offer, though afraid i'm not in London (or the UK for the matter), and thanks Dammit similarly for the heads up - will have a look into sourcing some tempered glass.

  • A bit late to this conversation, but have you looked at Humbrol enamels? I've used them to hide repairs in the past, and while not perfect it's been good enough. Other brands are available, also acrylics - my bias comes from having a local model shop with a proprietor who would spend ages matching colours to anything you put on the counter.

Two or three tins, a suitably fine brush and a bit of artiness might do it? They'll mix and blend with each other, and can be overpainted to get a closer match.

  • Frozen with a phillips head screwdriver bit in it.

  • Was it over tightened? Tbh, I’d try either putting it in a vice and going back and forward with the drill to try and work it loose. Or just do the same with your hand. Had chucks seize up, but the solution has always been a bit more force than seems reasonable. I’m reluctant to give that advice tho - a reasonable amount of force is a very subjective thing.

  • I haven't seen those since my Airfix days!

I'll try the pen thing, and if it's no good that's a decent-sounding backup, thanks.

  • I had a really old dewalt chuck jam on me. I was precious over it and tapped the jaws with a hammer and it freed up. Not sure I’d be so happy twatting a newer unit though

  • The sealing bead around my windows has perished / is peeling off in places and I want to fix it. I assumed it would be something I could buy on a roll and be an easy job but my searching hasn't yielded anything.

Does anyone know what the seal is made from? I thought it was a bead of sealant (put on with a gun) but the corners look like they are cut from a strip.

Both the interior and exterior beads should be white but thanks to the A2 they aren't...

  • I'm not sure but Broughton's have been ironmongers since 1888 so they might have been knocking them out for Donkey's. They've tons of styles, some pretty extravagant art deco ones. I liked the painted ones too but you know they'll look crap when the paint wears, great thing about brass is it looks better the more greasy mitts are on it.

  • Thanks, that looks very cool.

  • The locking bars within one of our double glazed windows has jammed in place - bottom left corner.

The other pins will shift to the unlocked position, but even after some light percussive maintenance the bottom left won't shift. How to make fix?

  • If it's got an accessible screw/fixing holding it in place from the inside, or on the edge where the locking action happens, back that off a bit and give it a squirt of something oily.

  • After all the tool chat I’m none the wiser lol. Definitely need a combo set so maybe just a matter of waiting for a decent offer on any of the above I suppose

  • I'm thinking with all this time not in work, I might actually get round to painting the front door/ window frames. Both wooden. What paint do I buy to put the least effort into doing so?

  • I’ve heard frenchic is good. Struggling to get stock of it locally

  • Do you know how to remove the inner bead?

Looking at the photos, the beads in the second photo look like they are behind trim. Also looks like the inner bead has not been fitted properly.

There are a few different types of rubber bead, so you need to remove the glass to see what kind of bead that you have.

  • The external seal is likely to be one of these E gaskets

    https://jcphardware.co.uk/gaskets-seals/e-gasket/

Internal one could be the same, or another E gasket, or possibly a Wedge gasket.

A sharp stiff scraper, glazing knife. remove the beads from the inside, remove the glass unit and see what's installed.
