I went with Makita for my cordless stuff (only got the basic combi drill and driver plus brished circular saw) because the blokes who did my kitchen about 5 years ago had pure Makita kit. I only buy it second hand.
the guys who did my windows earlier this year commented on it and said they switched from Makita to dewalt because the makita doesn't stand up to as much rough treatment.
that's about the extent of it.

You'll probably want this as well:

Almost all the trade people that have done stuff for me were DeWalt users.

Milwaukee are also a 'pro' brand.

I would also throw Milwaukee into the mix, same company as Ryobi. I have Makita, one brother has DeWalt and one has Milwaukee, and Milwaukee stuff has performed really well.

You have some time to kill watch aVe strip some down on you tube. With saucy comments on top of course.

Especially the one where he slates the festool track saw!

The Milwaukee brushless impact driver at work although way overkill for DIY (used for M16/24 bolts mostly) is a very impressive tool. Gets constant (ab)use (like dropped off a MEWP or soaked in acid) and doesn’t miss a beat.

Yeah my bro is a plant mechanic, the impact wrench Is fairly astonishing for a cordless tool

That combi drill is utter pants, v cheaply made,

Don’t get me started on that video! Smashing apart a tool then complaining when it doesn’t run well after you put it back together.
-
• #20891
Ok, so what I'm hearing is buy the Milwaukee as they're impossible to kill?
-
• #20892
Milwaukee is my fave. I've never had a problem with any Milwaukee tool.

He's not very complimentary about carpenters. I watched so much of that channel, really funny guy.

Honestly you will do fine with makita, dewalt or Milwaukee. The thing about Milwaukee is that they don’t really do bottom of the range, everything is mid range upwards. One thing to bear in mind is what other tools you might want in the future, as I said Milwaukee don’t do cheap so if you won’t a cheap tool you are out of luck, for example I got a cheap makita grinder for about £50, it’s not great but it does little jobs, anything that needs more power I get out the corded or petrol one.

I struggling to think based on Dammits cash burn rate why budget is even a consideration here.

The thought did pass through my head.

I'll get whatever drill I buy encrusted with diamonds to meet your high expectations of my profligacy.
-
• #20898
Oh really? I’ve heard people buying makita s/hand but I’m weary of doing this.
The Milwaukee seems the best option here

Ryobi is way cheaper in the states and Homedepot do really good deals. I got a brushless drill, impact driver, jigsaw, circular saw, 2 x 2aH, 1 x 3ah, 1 x 4ah and charger for less than £200 delivered. There are eBay sellers who buy the homedepot kits and sell on. Ridiculous value, perfectly adequate for diy needs and the added bonus of battery compatibility.

I'd consider blue Bosch, but that's maybe not as common in the UK? I'm strictly Makita at home, but the Bosch stuff at work is at least as good and prices are roughly comparable. Haven't managed to kill a Bosch tool for years and I spend most of my days with one of their drills in my hand.
this is what I was referring too. Seems a good deal.
