Though that’s quite an appealing price for the blacked out Navitimer 8.

Blue Chronomaster is nice too.

Even at 50% off... 11k is probably out of most ppls reach.

Agree both of those are nice and not too pricey.

Was just on a Zoom call with a colleague. He's 26, lives in Utrecht and is worth over $50m (wealth from cryptocurrency). We've discussed watches before, in depth. He has shown an interest in luxury watches but has a huge collection of shitty £5 to £50 fashion watches.
He just mentioned in passing that he bought a watch a few years ago as an investment and was wondering if it was worth any more than he paid for it. Off he goes to his safe and back he comes with a pristine full yellow gold Submariner from the year 2000. Full set, looks never worn.
How the fuck did this not come up in conversation before? :D

Hope you told him the arse has fallen off the market and they are slightly less than a caramac and a can of lilt.
-
• #43738
Ha ha. Should have told him it was a fake.
He asked about good watches to invest in. I have a feeling he will be making the steel sport model shortage even worse. Shame he has no interest in actually wearing them though. Not a show-off kind of chap.

worth over $50m (wealth from cryptocurrency)
Curious about this - how? He seems too young to have got in at the 10k BTC = 1 pizza stage.

He asked about good watches to invest in.
I am hugely triggered by this

Successful child businessman. Had an advertising agency by 17 that is still going and doing well. Branched out into medical software and PR. Bought lots of BTC in 2013 (aged 19ish) and then bought heavily into Dash in the first week after launch. Not sure about his BTC trades but bought most of his Dash for about one cent and sold for between $100 and $1000. Still holds half of his portfolio. I was working for Dash in those days, that's how we met. He invests in some of my projects.
Edit: to spell it out, most of his wealth came from crypto but he was wealthy before that.

Trigger factor:
people investing in superfluous property > people investing in superfluous watchesNot hating - just saying it's not the biggest crime going IMHO. Each to their own though.

Uh...it’s more the concept of someone having so much wealth yet they feel the need to ask such a question. It weirds me out.
People can buy what they want, but if you have £50M you don’t buy watches as an investment- you buy them as a game. Unless you are buying them by the crate load. In which case you should kinda know what you are doing.

Its like target fixation. Every decision becomes about growing wealth. So I guess it does become like a game. For what its worth, he's absurdly generous towards good causes and says that he will donate most of his net worth within the next ten years. I'll be interested to see if it does happen.

I’m guessing his marketing business was SEM or some kind of internet technology enabled thing. Targeting? Personalisation?
-
• #43749
Fucked if I know. I don't know much about his non crypto life beyond the headlines. He is very techie, diagnosed Aspergers and loves a Fossil watch. Should give you an idea of where his aptitudes lie...SEM sounds likely.

Fair enough - sometimes forget that other crypto has been lucrative (for anyone other than creators) too.
30-50% off you say.....
