Used to pick fruit as a teenager, the only others picking were kids, geriatrics, travellers and Eastern Europeans. This was before the fall of the Berlin wall, so these guys weren’t working legally.
Traditionally this work was largely performed by itinerant labour largely bolstered by the Roma and Irish traveller communities.
British people haven’t wanted this work for a couple of centuries.

I've seen the temp accomodation for fruit pickers in Fife and Angus.
Really ratty caravans and outdoor shower blocks in the middle of nowhere. Fucking depressing.
