NEW: 6 charter flights from Romania to bring in 450 workers for British farms tomorrow - BBC WATO news reporting
Well how that "there is now unemployment so surely people have the skill to work the fields / can actually physically go there / won't penalized on benefits for short term work " working out?

I have a facebook friend that is a farmer, who posted a plea to the nation for soft-fruit pickers.
They were generous enough to offer below living wages, further garnered to pay for living in a shitty tin shack.

Lovely...
Not all those jobs are like that. But then it is basically legal exploitation if they don't set fair wages and living conditions for the people they fly in.

I thought Honda moved production back to Japan as the result of the trade deal Signed last year with the EU which meant zero tariffs on cars imported from Japan to the EU. This meant it was cheaper to manufacture in Japan and ship around the world than to have a plant in Europe.

I've seen the temp accomodation for fruit pickers in Fife and Angus.
Really ratty caravans and outdoor shower blocks in the middle of nowhere. Fucking depressing.

No, they intended on turning Swindon into their centre for manufacturing elements of/complete electronic vehicles, and had the fit-out for the upgrade of the factory on a boat steaming for the UK from Japan. They turned the boat around at sea when it became clear that the UK was pursuing the maximal friction model, as it would make vehicles produced in the UK uncompetitive to impossible (given their reliance on JIT).
That the tariffs on cars are going to step down for Japan>EU over the next few years no doubt made their decision easier, but it was the decisions we made around Brexit that shut Swindon.

The consensus on the car forums that I frequent is that this problem (lack of fruit pickers) is directly a result of being too soft, and that if we cut Universal Credit payments then unemployed people would (literally) be starved into fruit picking jobs.

Extraneous words removed.

Why don't we just cook the poor and hand them out as a free meal to deserving pensioners?
(apologies to Jonathan Swift)

might not need to.

No argument there...

@Dammit probably knows more given his answer. However, from memory (I cba to look it up) most of the UK car manufacturers have now left / are going (honda, nissan, ford, vauxhall, jlr, mini/BMW).
It's frankly unbelievable that their collective, dramatic, decision wasn't driven almost entirely by Brexit versus 'BUT THE DIESEL SCANDAL!!' excuses that Brexit apologists trotted out.

If the fruit pickers were paid an acceptable living wage, how much more expensive would British farm produce become at the point of sale?
Would be curious to know whether someone has done the numbers. -
• #26717
Basically what happens in Switzerland. Shits expensive because people have to be paid enough to live, feed, house and entertain themselves and if your business can't afford it, then close it because it clearly isn't viable.

So who here can link to 1 kg of onions from a representative Swiss online grocer?
-
• #26719
Only 500g but it's a smaller country
-
• #26720
Not onions but found this which looks broadly credible...

So my rough calculations is that the Swiss onions are a little over 25 - 30% more expensive? Surely that's worth it to know you're not eating slave picked food. Small proportion of your total grocery bill in any case.

Used to pick fruit as a teenager, the only others picking were kids, geriatrics, travellers and Eastern Europeans. This was before the fall of the Berlin wall, so these guys weren’t working legally.
Traditionally this work was largely performed by itinerant labour largely bolstered by the Roma and Irish traveller communities.
British people haven’t wanted this work for a couple of centuries.
It’s ok I imagine several Tory grandees are major shareholders via offshore companies, then all the wealth can trickle down.
